Avec la guerre, les foules "embrigadées" (on reconnaît à travers ce terme le penseur critique, pionnier de la psychologie des masses) finissent par renoncer à l'exercice démocratique. Les peuples s'affrontent mais les valeurs et les idéaux s'effondrent devant la montée d'un militarisme en Europe. Les écrits de cet éminent sociologue furent en leur temps une référence pour de nombreux théoriciens (Durkheim, Freud, Arendt...) mais méritent une redécouverte. Ce volumineux ouvrage est au nombre de ces derniers. Gustave Le Bon, né le 7 mai 1841 à Nogent-le-Rotrou et mort le 13 décembre 1931 à Marnes-la-Coquette, est un médecin, anthropologue, psychologue social et sociologue français. " La sombre catastrophe dont l'Europe est le théâtre n'atteint pas seulement l'existence matérielles des peuples, mas encore leurs pensées. Beaucoup d'illusions tenues pour des certitudes s'évanouissent. Des théories, jadis sans prestige, deviennent des vérités éclatantes. Le bloc des traditions se désagrège. D'antiques assises de la vie sociale s'effondrent. Tout a changé ou va changer..
