Mit einem Marktanteil von über fünfzig Prozent erscheint die Media- print mit ihren Produkten Kronen-Zeitung und Kurier in Österreich übermächtig. Tatsächlich findet sich der landesweite Marktführer in einer Situation wieder, in der er auf den regionalen Teilmärkten einerseits auf nur wenige Mitbewerber trifft, die andererseits teilweise als regionale Marktführer auftreten. In dieser Arbeit werden industrie- ökonomische Modelle herangezogen, um das Verhalten der Anbieter auf dem österreichischen Markt für Tageszeitungen im Beobachtungs- zeitraum 1979 bis 2003 zu erklären. Zu diesem Zweck werden Marktanteile und Preisänderungen ausführlich dokumentiert und anschließend interpretiert. Dabei zeigen sich als Ergebnisse, dass (i) die Nachfrage nach dem Produkt Tageszeitung vom Ausmaß der Produktdifferenzierung abhängig ist, (ii) die Marktstrukturen der den Bundesländern entsprechenden neun Teilmärkte sehr unterschiedlich sind, und (iii) die Mediaprint und ihre Vorgänger sowohl landesweit wie regional trotz Marktführerschaft zumeist die Rolle eines Preisfolgers einnehmen.
