Die Freiheitsabhandlung, 1839 preisgekrönt, aber bis heute als eine Gelegenheitsschrift vernachlässigt, ist die Summe einer kritischen Freiheitsanalyse der Tradition und zugleich der Ausgangspunkt jeder neueren Freiheitstheorie, die wissenschaftlichen Kriterien genügen will. Schopenhauers Verwerfung der These von einer Freiheit des Willens eint als sinnvolle Arbeitsvoraussetzung empirischer Forschung selbst Psychoanalyse und Behaviorismus. Seine Begründung zu verfolgen scheint gerade dann geboten, wenn eine 'Ethik ohne Metaphysik' möglich sein soll: Die Hauptthese der Unfreiheit des Willens verteidigt Schopenhauer unabhängig von seiner spekulativen Philosophie und mit dem strengen Anspruch auf Überprüfbarkeit.
About the Author: Arthur Schopenhauer wir 1788 in Danzig als Sohn einer Kaufmannsfamilie geboren. Nach der Übersiedelung der Familie nach Hamburg wird der junge Arthur vor die Wahl gestellt, eine zweijährige Vergnügungsreise zu machen und dann Kaufmann zu werden oder ohne Reise studieren zu dürfen. Er entscheidet sich für die Reise, holt aber nach dem Tod des Vaters das Abitur nach und beginnt zunächst Medizin, dann aber Philosophie in Göttingen zu studieren. Zu den ersten Lesern seiner Dissertation Über die Vierfache Wurzel des Satzes vom zureichenden Grunde gehört 1813 Goethe. Sechs Jahre später erscheint Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung, in dem Schopenhauer eine an Berkeley angelehnte Physiologie der Wahrnehmung formuliert. Demnach existiere die Erscheinungswelt nur insoweit, als sie wahrgenommen werde und im menschlichen Bewußtsein sei, also als Vorstellung. Dem Werk bleibt größere Aufmerksamkeit versagt. Eine kurze Phase philosophischer Lehrtätigkeit schließt sich 1820 in Berlin an, wo Schopenhauer in Konkurrenz zu dem deutlich populäreren Hegel tritt, sich aber bald nach Frankfurt als Privatgelehrter zurückzieht. 1838 wird seine Schrift Über die Freiheit des menschlichen Willens von der Norwegischen Societät der Wissenschaften preisgekrönt. 1841 erscheint diese Preisschrift zusammen mit Über das Fundament der Moral unter dem zusammenfassenden Titel Die beiden Grundprobleme der Ethik. Mit Pererga und Paralipomena gelingt Schopenhauer 1851 erstmalig ein öffentlicher Erfolg. Die letzten Lebensjahre sind gekennzeichnet durch die Entwicklung eines System des empirischen und metaphysischen Pessimismus, der Schopenhauers Wirkung insbesondere auf Nietzsche begründet. Schopenhauer stirbt 1860 in Frankfurt.
