About the Book

Der in Basel in bescheidenen Verhaltnissen geborene Johann Peter Hebel (1760-1826), ist vor allem als erfolgreicher Volksschriftsteller und Popularasthet bekannt. Seine 'Alemannischen Gedichte' wie auch seine Kalendergeschichten fur den 'Rheinlandischen Hausfreund', die als 'Schatzkastlein des rheinischen Hausfreundes' bis in die Gegenwart weite Verbreitung und zahlreiche Auflagen finden, lassen haufig vergessen, dass Hebel nicht nur ein innovativer Padagoge und Lehrer, sondern auch ein uberaus gebildeter evangelischer Theologe war, der als Pralat in hochste kirchenleitende Funktionen im Grossherzogtums Baden aufruckte. Der Spataufklarung verpflichtet, die einerseits Vernunft und Religion zusammen dachte und andererseits als Volksaufklarung mentale Transformationen auch des 'Volkes' intendierte, wandte sich Hebel gegen theologische Borniertheit und Dogmatismus, um stattdessen fur Toleranz und kritischen Gebrauch der Vernunft zu pladieren. Als katechetisches Werk erlangten seine 'Biblischen Geschichten' grosse Bedeutung. Andere theologische Schriften von Hebel sind derzeit nicht greifbar. Die einzige Ausgabe seiner gedruckten Predigten erschien zweibandig in seinen 'Samtlichen Werken' 1838. Sie umfasst am Karlsruher Hof gehaltene geistliche Reden aus den Jahren 1792 bis 1804. Da diese Predigten sowohl fur eine prazise Rekonstruktion der Theologie Hebels als auch fur die Beschreibung spataufklarerischer Predigten unverzichtbar sind, werden sie anlasslich des 250. Geburtstages von Hebel in einer Leseausgabe wieder zuganglich gemacht.
About the Author: Die Herausgeber Thomas K. Kuhn, geboren 1963, studierte Theologie in Bonn, Marburg, Wuppertal und Basel; Promotion und Habilitation in Basel. Professor fur Ethik an der Evangelischen Fachhochschule Rheinland-Westfalen-Lippe in Bochum sowie Titularprofessor fur Kirchen- und Theologiegeschichte an der Universitat Basel. Forschungsschwerpunkte sind u.a. das 18. und 19. Jahrhundert sowie die sudwestdeutsche und schweizerische Christentumsgeschichte. Hans-J. Schmidt, geboren 1941, evangelischer Pfarrer und Diplom-Padagoge (Erwachsenenbildung), 1988 bis 2004 Leiter der Evangelischen Tagungs- und Begegnungsstatte Schloss Beuggen bei Rheinfelden, seit 2004 im Ruhestand; seit 2001 Prasident des Hebelbundes Lorrach.
