Nachdem das Spekulative Denken in England und Amerika uber 40 Jahre lang die 0berherrschaft gehabt hat, ist es nicht zu ver wundern, wenn wir gegenwärtig eine neue Bewegung finden, deren Bestrebungen in einer etwas anderen Richtung liegen. Das Bestreben der gewöhnlich als englischer neu-kantianismus oder kritischer Idealismus bezeichneten Philosophie ist es durch ihre ganze Entwick lung gewesen, das �bergewicht der Vernunft als einer reinen Denk tätigkeit zu betonen. Und jetzt hören wir ungefä.hr denselben Protest gegen den Intellektualismus und die Unfruchtbarkeit seiner Abstrak tionen, der in Deutschland in den sechziger Jahren des vorigen Jahr hunderts allgemein zu hören war; auch macht sich jetzt ebenfalls das Bestreben bemerkbar, das ein Gewicht auf die Willenstätigkeit der menschlichen Natur als etwas ihrem Intellekt Entgegengesetztes legt, obgleich die gegenwärtige anglo-amerikanische Bewegung, wie sich zeigen wird, von der deutschen Reaktion nach Art und Methode ganz verschieden ist.

Der Versuch, eine vorläufige Erklarung der neuen Lehre zu geben, wurde an dieser Stelle vielleicht nicht nur überflüssig, sondern irreführend sein. Denn nach den Kontroversen zu urteilen, die zwischen den entgegengesetzten Parteien stattgefunden haben, muÃ? es scheinen, als ob eine umfassende Definition nicht leicht zu geben sei. Die Führer der neuen Bewegung versichern fortgesetzt, daÃ? ihre Kritiker den richtigen Sinn ihrer Lehre nicht erfaÃ?ten, während diese nicht zu zögern scheinen, diesen ihnen gemachten Vorwurf zuzugeben, so daÃ? es den Anschein haben muÃ?, daÃ? entweder die Kritiker unverbesser lich dumm sind, oder daÃ? am Ende die Herolde des neuen Lichtesihren eigenen Weg selbst nicht klar vor Augen sehen. Doch, ohne den Versuch zu machen, das Rätsel zu lösen, wird es hier genügen festzustellen, daÃ? die Aufgabe der neuen Philosophie darauf hinausläuft, das richtige Verhältnis zwischen der theoretischen und der prakti schen Seite der menschlichen Natur wiederherzustellen. In den vor herrschenden intellektuellen Systemen war die Theorie die Grundlage der Praxis. Die Ethik hat ihre Basis in der Metaphysik. Die neuere Entwicklung kehrt dieses Verhältnis um. Die Theorie ist ihrer hohen Bewertung verlustig gegangen und der Praxis untergeordnet worden. Hinfort wird die Wahrheit nicht mehr in einem vorgeblichen logischen ProzeÃ? gesucht werden. Wahrheit ist das, was sich als fähig erweist, die Forderungen einer Welt zu erfüllen, in der der Mensch handeln muÃ?. Wahrheit ist kurz gesagt das, was sich in der Praxis brauch bar erweist (which works out in practice). Das ist der Grunn des Pragmatismus eines Wortes, das vom Griechischen kommt (neofyya) und allgemein benutzt worden ist, die mehr auf das Prak tische gerichtete Art des Denkens, seine ZweckmäÃ?igkeit und den teleologischen Charakter seiner Methoden zu bezeichnen.
