Ich brauche die Verbindung zur sinnlichen Welt, den Mut zur Häßlichkeit, das Leben ohne Verdünnung."1 Gerade der schweigsame Otto Dix, jener Künstler, der seine Kunstwerke aus sich heraus sprechen lassen möchte, der keine Vorgaben, keine Erklärungen liefert, gerade dieser Otto Dix offenbart mit dem prägnanten Ausspruch den Kern seines Schaffens. Beobachtend, lauernd nimmt er seine Umgebung wahr. Er analysiert, wertet seine Erlebnisse aus und hält dem Publikum schonungslos den Spiegel vor. Vielleicht bescherte genau aus diesem Grund zu Lebzeiten Otto Dixs das Ölgemälde Mädchen vor dem Spiegel2 von 1921, welches wahrscheinlich im zweiten Weltkrieg vernichtet wurde, einen großen Skandal um den Künstler.3 In diesem Kontext findet vom 10. November 2012 bis 7. April 2013 die Ausstellung Das Auge der Welt. Otto Dix und die Neue Sachlichkeit 1920 - 1945. im Kunstmuseum Stuttgart statt.4 Wie wir sehen, ist Otto Dix auch in der heutigen Zeit noch aktuell. Gerade für den Historiker sind Werke von sozialkritischen Künstlern sehr interessant. Die Kunstwerke gewähren einen Zugang zur Gesellschaft der damaligen Zeit. Wenn der Künstler, wie Otto Dix, nachweislich seine Geisteshaltung selbst bestätigt, ist das natürlich ein guter Beleg, um die Kunst jener Maler genauer zu analysieren. Kunst ist ein guter Indikator um die Veränderungen in der Gesellschaft anzuzeigen. Denn die Künstler, mit ihrer feinen Wahrnehmung, sind oftmals der Zeit ein Stück voraus. Sie erkennen Prozesse in ihrer Umwelt und haben den Spielraum unter dem Deckmantel der Kunst Kritik an der Gesellschaft zu üben.
