About the Book

Praesten i Vejlby ved Grenaa, Soren Jensen Quist, blev i 1626 henrettet for at have draebt sin kusk med en tinkande 19 ar tidligere. Et ojenvidne til drabet forklarede, at praesten herefter ikke kunne tale at se mordvabenet, hvorfor han foraerede tinkanden til sin soster. Praestefamilien fik med hjaelp fra lensmanden og andre adelige pa lokale herregarde retsopgoret udskudt i de mange ar, hvorefter praesten blev domt ved tre instanser. I 1633-34 fik praestens son sagen indbragt pa ny for domstolene, hvor dommerne ved tre instanser naegtede at aendre dommen over praesten. Siden da har mindst 44 personer og heraf mindst 15 praester skrevet om praestens uskyld uden at ga ind i retssagernes indhold. Hvis man vil kende sandheden, sa vidt det er muligt, kan man vaelge at ga i retsprotokollerne pa Landsarkivet i Viborg og Rigsarkivet i Kobenhavn, hvor den virkelige historie er beskrevet. Man vil her kunne laese praestens overraskende svar, da han af en dommer blev spurgt, om han ville erklaere sig skyldig, hvis det blev bevist, at sosteren havde faet en tinkande af ham. Sonnen Peder lovede ved faderens henrettelse haevn, idet han skrev med blodskrift pa et traesaede pa tingstedet: -Det uskyldige Blod vi betaler-. Peder fik gennemfort sin blodhaevn, sa den kostede livet for de to hovedvidner og maske ogsa for det ene hovedvidnes kone samt for delefogeden og dennes svigerdatter. Myter om sagen blev skabt af praestesonnen og viderefort fra slaegt til slaegt. Myterne fik ny naering gennem romanen fra 1829 af St. St. Blicher -Praesten i Vejlbye-. Blicher solgte romanen pa, at skrive, at beretningen -desvaerre! er alt for sand- f.s.v. angar -det Vaesentligste af Historien-. Tanken om det uskyldige offer for justitsmord virkede dragende pa laeserne, men har Blicher nogensinde set retsakterne? Nar myterne om de lutter gode mennesker i praestens familie skraelles af, er virkeligheden bl.a.: - Broderen Rasmus truede ojenvidnet til tavshed. - Konen tilbod bestikkelse til foged, laegdommere og vidner. - Sostere
