About the Book

Capturing measures taken to fulfill a successful career in the United States Air Force, Retired Chief Master Sergeant Rodney "Q" Phillips uses his experiences to guide the reader on a fantastic journey through personal and professional development. "A Practical Guide To SUCCESS in the United States Air Force" provides first-hand accounts of difficult challenges and describes the drive and determination needed to remove barriers from your path. Injecting techniques to adjust to Air Force life, embrace diversity, establish strong networks, and a host of other necessities, Phillips sets a solid foundation for limitless achievement. The chief uses positive motivation and self determination to encourage goal accomplishment. He even offers a few tips on promotion preparation and creation of effective performance reports and award packages. Ideal for individual and team pursuit of excellence, this book is indeed a must read for all Airmen!
About the Author: Rodney "Q" Phillips was born in Calhoun, Georgia. He is now living with his beautiful wife and three wonderful children in Schertz, Texas. His career in the United States Air Force spanned more than 24 years during which he served in various capacities in Logistics and as a professional military education instructor and facilitator. Most notably, he has performed duties as a traffic management officer, flight chief, superintendent, and major command functional manager. His many successes propelled him to the highest rank an enlisted person can reach: Chief Master Sergeant. Phillips was born into a poor family. When he was 13, he began working in the Gordon County School District as a janitor at local elementary and middle school campuses. Raised early on by his mother, he lived several years with relatives and eventually landed a permanent home with his uncle and brother in a 900 square foot housing project. During his sophomore year in high school, Phillips decided he would enlist in the United States Air Force. Not knowing much about the Air Force, he decided not to pursue additional information anticipating the reality would be vastly different from any insight offered by a few Army veterans. In 1986, Phillips left Calhoun for his first assignment at Chanute Air Force Base, Illinois. From there he went on to serve in Japan, Maryland, Korea, Alabama, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Texas. Accomplishing many first-ever feats, he consistently sought complex challenges and performed at levels well above his longevity and experience. Although personally successful, having received numerous accolades and awards for outstanding duty performance and earning three associate's degrees, a bachelor's degree and a master's degree of his own, the chief devoted countless hours to help those around him increase their individual and collective abilities. Aiming to help everyone he came in contact with reach his or her fullest potential, Phillips wrote several leadership themed publications and delivered practical "how to" training classes aimed at expanding communication, supervisory, mentorship, and followership skills. "A Practical Guide To SUCCESS in the United States Air Force," his first book, is an expression of gratitude for those who helped Phillips along the way and a gesture of his humble pursuit to give back.
