L'objectif de ce livre est de contribuer au champ de recherche de la CCT sur l'identité sociale, en mettant l'accent sur le pouvoir du point de vue du consommateur et en étudiant comment le pouvoir peut être accentué au sein de l'identité sociale. La théorie de la CCT axée sur l'identité sociale a été utilisée en combinaison avec une vaste littérature sur le pouvoir et l'autorité d'un point de vue sociologique, ainsi qu'avec la littérature des études de mode axée sur l'habillement du pouvoir, la consommation ostentatoire et le luxe. La question de la recherche est la suivante: comment les femmes cadres supérieurs utilisent-elles l'habillage du pouvoir et la consommation de marques de mode de luxe haut de gamme pour tenter d'accentuer le pouvoir en tant que partie intégrante de leur identité sociale ? Des entretiens semi-structurés approfondis ont été utilisés comme principale méthode de collecte des données. Cinq femmes cadres supérieurs travaillant à Stockholm ont été interrogées, en utilisant leur consommation de mode comme échantillon empirique de l'étude. La principale conclusion de cette étude est la création du concept d'habillement codé par le pouvoir. Les implications de ce livre sont qu'il développe le domaine de la CCT en ajoutant une perspective de pouvoir du consommateur dans le discours théorique.
