Le phénomène de l'adaptation filmique de textes littéraires est aussi vieux que le cinéma lui-même, et depuis le début du siècle, un nombre impressionnant d'études a été consacré à son sujet. Cependant, l'on ne peut conclure aujourd'hui que l'on ait réussi à développer une théorie cohérente et systématique de l'adaptation filmique.
Dans cet ouvrage, Patrick Cattrysse propose une méthode qui permet d'étudier le phénomène de l'adaptation filmique d'une manière conséquente et théoriquement fondée. Dans une première partie, théorique, l'auteur explique les concepts de base de cette méthode. Dans une seconde partie, pratique, il vérifie l'applicabilité des concepts à l'analyse d'un corpus d'adaptations particulier, à savoir le film noir américain des années 1940 et 1950.
Les considérations théoriques et pratiques permettent de combler plusieurs lacunes dans le champ d'étude de l'adaptation filmique. Outre les adaptations de textes littéraires canoniques, le champ d'étude couvre aussi les adaptations de textes littéraires populaires, voire les adaptations de textes non littéraires tels les articles de journaux, les dossiers de police, les jeux radiophoniques ou télévisés, les scénarios, etc. En étudiant l'adaptation filmique, l'on ne demande plus si le film reproduit fidèlement le texte d'origine. Le procès de transfert est situé dans un contexte plus large, et l'on examine quels sont les facteurs qui ont déterminé le procès de production filmique et le fonctionnement de son résultat final dans le contexte filmique. Enfin, en prenant en considération le contexte pragmatique de l'adaptation filmique, la méthode ne se limite plus à une approche synchronique. Le phénomène de l'adaptation filmique est également analysé dans son évolution historique.
