Die realistische Literatur des 19. Jahrhunderts wird heute nicht unter dem Gesichtspunkt der Mimesis, sondern unter dem der modellbildenden Reaktion auf Wirklichkeitsbegriffe und soziokulturelle Rahmensysteme betrachtet bzw. auf die diese vermittelnden literarischen Konventionen. Eine solche Konvention ist mit der trivialen oder schematischen Literatur, auch in Form der romance, gegeben. Mit einer stabilen Handlungs- und Figurenstruktur transportiert diese Literatur ein fest umrissenes ideologisches Wertesystem und dient so der Kontingenzbewältigung. Sie bildet eine Folie hoher historischer Konstanz, von der sich auch die Literatur der Epoche des Realismus absetzt. Wesentliche Charakteristika der realistischen Schreibweise lassen sich aus der Abweichung von schematischen Handlungsstrukturen und Figurengruppierungen ablesen. Diese Abkehr dient auch der Ideologiekritik, der Kritik an einer Kontingenzbewältigung durch der Wirklichkeit nicht mehr angemessene Normensysteme. Realistische Literatur bezieht sich entweder auf die positivistische Wissenschaft als neue intersubjektive Norm, ohne moralische Handlungsanleitungen ganz zu vernachlässigen, oder sie problematisiert die Sinnhaftigkeit und die Verfügbarkeit der Welt. Der Textappell ist antiideologisch ausgerichtet bis hin zu seiner möglichen Tilgung. Beide Positionen sind Ausformungen einer Ästhetik der Gegenüberstellung, der auf jeweils unterschiedliche Weise auch Bleak House, Vanity Fair und Middlemarch zuzurechnen sind.
