This brave, accomplished, and magnificent nobleman was the eldest son and heir of Sir Charles Cavendish, next and younger brother to the first Earl of Devonshire Of the family, by Catharine, second Of the two daughters and coheirs of Cuth bert, last Lord Ogle of his surname. He was born in the year 1592, and is said to have received under his paternal roof an education which, though by no means deficient in the ordi nary scholastic studies, was peculiarly calculated to inspire him with a taste for polite literature, and to ground him in that long variety of nameless elegancies of mind and carriage which adorn courts, and grace private society. Thus quali fied, he was presented to James the First, and at the age of eighteen was one Of the Knights of the Bath appointed on the creation of Henry, Prince of Wales. He now became one Of the most familiar attendants on the royal family, but a generous indifference, or a love of independence, kept him disengaged from any of those offices of Specific employment which the degree of royal favour that he enjoyed might have insured to him. In 1617 he succeeded, on the death of his father, to the possession Of a noble estate, and on the third of November, 1620, was raised to the Peerage, by the titles of Lord, Ogle and Viscount Mansfield, the former of which might be considered as a mere anticipation, Since he stood at that time in a certainty of the inheritance Of the ancient Barony, to which he afterwards succeeded.
