Cuando inspiramos profundamente ante un paisaje boscoso que, sin darnos cuenta de ello, nos habla de la presencia de agua y comida, no pensamos en la sangrienta lucha escondida tras su follaje. Cada especie fue engendrada por procesos naturales que, a través de un sinfín de pequeñas casualidades físicas y químicas, provocan cambios en el entorno atmosférico, geológico y biológico. Son estas fluctuaciones medioambientales las que ejercen de salvadores o verdugos insensibles, aleatoriamente, sobre el infinito número de alteraciones bioquímicas que han esculpido nuestros linajes desde hace millones de años. Nuestro planeta se formó hace cuatro mil quinientos millones de años y el primer microorganismo apareció algo menos de mil millones de años después, pero fueron necesarios otros tres mil quinientos millones de años de evolución para que el polvo de estrellas original adquiriese forma humana. La vida, nacida de una combinación de materia inerte, rayos solares y agua en los pantanos y lagunas prebióticos, siguió un curso ramificado en el que lo complejo predomina sobre lo sencillo, lo más eficaz sobre lo menos eficiente, hasta empezar a tener consciencia de sí misma. Aunque su desarrollo no supone sorpresa alguna con respecto a las demás especies, el ser humano no solamente sabe aprender tareas complicadas de la experiencia ajena, sino que inventa y construye aparatos que posibilitan la extensión de sus propias capacidades corporales. Hace tan sólo doscientos mil años, nació nuestra especie en el Sur de África. Una fortuita modificación genética nos proporcionó un recubrimiento cerebral gris, llamado neocórtex, que nos otorgaba una capacidad única en la Naturaleza... la de pensar conscientemente
