POPESCU E. NAPOLEON: A Novel. Volume 1

This book is in Romanian. It is the first volume of a three-volume bildungsroman novel presenting the life of a man who compares himself to Napoleon. A better rendering of the title into English would be Popescu Is Napoleon where Is should be read as the second name of that person (as well as the verb is; the pun is intended).

Ştefan Goanţă rămâne în literature română ca un mare scriitor. Prietenul lui, un alt mare scriitor roman contemporan, Ştefan Dimitriu, îl prezintă astfel:

Dacă ar fi să caracterizez într-un singur cuvânt această carte, aş spune fără să ezit: fermecătoare! După ce veţi cunoaşte lumea în care scriitorul Ştefan Goanţă (1933- 2010) vă va conduce de-a lungul trilogiei sale romaneşti, veţi găsi dumneavoastră înşivă o infinitate de argumente care să justifice acest cuvânt. Pentru că, fără nicio exagerare, ţineţi în mână una din cele mai adevărate şi mai tulburătoare cărţi ale literaturii române. Pe care nădăjduiesc s-o descopere nu numai cititorii, dar şi criticii noştri.
Napoleon E. Popescu, personajul care dă şi numele romanului, este un adolescent care-şi povesteşte cu o vervă impresionantă intrarea sa în lume, într-o epocă - imediat după război - când lumea aceasta se întorcea pur şi simplu pe dos. De altfel, motivul acesta al lumii pe dos, al răsturnărilor sociale şi al salturilor mortale de conştiinţă, va deveni obsesia fertilă a povestitorului şi leitmotivul cărţii.
Fiu de învăţători săteşti cu avere şi licean în primele clase, Napoleon E. Popescu va oscila încontinuu între lumea din care se trage şi lumea care-l absoarbe în vârtejul ei necruţător, din această catastrofală distanţă dintre cei doi poli ai existenţei sale rezultând tensiunea întregului, ca şi farmecul fiecărei pagini. Un farmec întreţinut permanent de tonul povestitorului, care are în el atâta forţă, atâta feerie, atâta candoare, dar şi atâta haz bonom, încât - citindu-l - ai senzaţia unei lumi de poveste (cu Feţi Frumoşi, Ilene Cosânzene, dar şi cu Zmei fioroşi), în care însă binele rareori învinge.
Nu vom spune mai mult despre conţinutul acestui roman cu totul aparte, pentru a le lăsa cititorilor plăcerea de a-l descoperi singuri. Am dori doar să remarcăm stilul său inconfundabil, în care povestitorul la persoana întâia - aflat parcă permanent între vis şi realitate, între fabulaţia radioasă şi adevărul cutremurător, cu un ritm gâfâit şi cu fraze rămase adesea în aer - ne conduce printr-un basm de oameni mari văzut cu ochii dilataţi de uimire ai unui copil năzdrăvan, martor dar şi participant la un moment de răscruce al istoriei.
La un moment dat, Ştefan Goanţă spune despre unul dintre personajele sale feminine că este "o duminică de femeie." De ce n-am spune şi noi, parafrazându-l, că romanul acesta al său este o duminică de carte?

Scriitorul ŞTEFAN GOANŢĂ (1933-2010)

Ştefan GOANŢĂ s-a născut la 11 martie 1933 la Nuntaşi-Istria (Constanţa) şi a decedat la 19 octombrie 2010 la Timişoara.
A absolvit Institutul Pedagogic din Cluj-Napoca (1968).
A ocupat diferite funcţii in domeniul culturii din judeţul Sălaj: director şi apoi metodist la Casa Creaţiei Populare, director al Casei de Cultură a Sindicatelor din Zalău.
A cercetat folclorul sălăjean şi a publicat colecţiile "De dor şi de omenie" (1971, in colaborare cu Ion Piţoiu) şi "Du-te, dor, şi vino, dor" (1972). A colaborat la revistele "Ateneu, Caiete Silvane, Cronica, Familia, Graiul Sălajului, Năzuinţa, Silvania, Spiritul veacului, Steaua, Tribuna, Vatra Veche" ş.a.
A regizat spectacole, a scris poezie, teatru, proză scurtă, romane.
A fost membru al Uniunii Scriitorilor din Romania, Filiala Cluj.
A primit Premiul filialei Cluj a USR pentru literatură destinată copiilor.
