Mediante los donativos, se aprovechaba efectivamente la riqueza de los súbditos y, en tiempos de guerra, se despertaba la lealtad de éstos. Asimismo, los donativos permitían a los aportantes solicitar beneficios económicos, políticos y sociales. En este libro se sostiene que, dentro del marco de la tradición política española, los donativos representaban la manera legítima que tenían los súbditos para comunicar sus múltiples intereses al rey. A pesar de que las oportunidades de negociación surgían en momentos críticos y se originaban en la esfera fiscal, los acuerdos basados en donativos tenían repercusiones fuera del terreno fiscal y financiero, ya que éstas vinculaban al rey y a los súbditos no sólo durante los momentos de crisis que les daban origen a dichos acuerdos, sino incluso luego de tales crisis. Al pretender compensaciones a cambio de apoyo financiero, los aportantes reclamaban el otorgamiento de derechos y convertían los donativos en actos políticos.

Viviana L. Grieco es profesora de Historia Latinoamericana en la University of Missouri (Kansas City). Nacida en Buenos Aires, estudiando en la UBA y obteniendo luego su doctorado en la Emory University, ejerciendo la docencia en ambas casas de altos estudios. Ha estudiado particularmente la economía política y el desenvolvimiento cultural en el Virreinato del Río de la Plata. El presente libro fue editado originalmente por la University of New Mexico Press. También se ha dedicado a los estudios de género y sexualidad en América Latina, así como a investigaciones en torno a Metodología en Historiografía.
