Extrait du texte: Devant la cinémathèque française. À l'affiche: L'homme à la caméra (Chelovek s kinoapparatom, 1929) de Dziga Vertov. La séance est terminée, les spectateurs sortent du cinéma. Le cinéaste: Dites-moi, que pensez-vous de ce film ? L'historien: Il s'agit certainement d'un chef d'oeuvre du cinéma soviétique, unique dans sa conception. Le cinéaste: Pourtant j'ai beaucoup de difficultés à le placer. S'agit-il d'un documentaire, d'un film de propagande ou d'un film d'avant-garde ? L'historien: Le film comprend toutes ces caractéristiques en soi. Il date de 1929. En ce temps, le cinéma soviétique avait passé son apothéose. Le début de l'époque stalinienne marque la fin de la nouvelle économie politique qui anima la production cinématographique entre 1921 et 1928 . L'homme à la caméra est une charnière chronologique entre l'art révolutionnaire des années vingt et le réalisme soviétique, imposée par Staline et le Parti Communiste en 1932. L'essence du film me semble néanmoins avoir de profondes racines dans l'idéologie léniniste et l'esthétique révolutionnaire issue du constructivisme et du futurisme. Le film comporte des caractéristiques provenant de l'avant-garde, mais il se présente surtout sous forme documentaire. Vertov, le réalisateur, lui-même en a parlé de documentaire poétique . Le cinéaste: Le film est très complexe. Non seulement il est monté à partir de plus de 1700 plans, ce qui correspond à plus du double d'un film américain moyen de ce temps, mais leur signification dans le film est souvent difficile à compren
