Jahrhundert, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die Untersuchung gesellschaftlicher Zeichensysteme am Beispiel der französischen Revolution zu vollziehen, bietet sich aus verschiedenen Gründen an. Der wichtigste Grund liegt in dem enormen Umfang, in welchem die gesamte Gesellschaft des revolutionären Frankreich, Teil einer Politisierung gewesen ist, bzw. in ihrem alltäglichen Leben ritualisiert wurde. Sämtliche Lebensbereiche, wie Architektur, Kunst, Theater, Mode, Bildung, sowie die konventionellen Regeln des gesellschaftlichen Miteinanders wurden von den Umwälzungen der Revolution erfasst. Beinahe alles wurde als Symbol politischer Einstellungen gewertet. Darüber hinaus wird das 18. Jahrhundert selbst als ein "semiotisches Jahrhundert" bezeichnet, da sich bereits zu Beginn des Jahrhunderts eine neue Diskursgeschichte der Zeichen herausbildete, welche die Frage nach der Position der Zeichen innerhalb der Ordnungen des Wissens stellte. [...] Die Künstler der französischen Revolution hatten die Aufgabe, die neuen Ansprüche und Regeln, in die breite Masse der Gesellschaft zu tragen und ihnen auf diese Weise eine klare Vorstellung von der "besseren" Gesellschaft zu vermitteln. Der Künstler Jacques Louis David (1748 - 1825) kann als einer der bedeutendsten "Architekten" derartiger Symbolpolitik der französischen Revolution bezeichnet werden. In seinen Werken findet sich der Ausdruck einer neuen politischen Kultur und gesellschaftlichen Ordnung, wie sie den Idealen der französischen Revolution entsprach. Nicht nur, das David durch das aktive Mitwirken an der Inszenierung politischer Feste oder durch das Entwerfen eines "Nationalkostüms", an der Bildung und Verbreitung republikanischer Tugendmodelle mitwirkte, sondern bereits seine vorrevolutionären Bilder transportierten den Geist der Republi
