About the Book

Carlo Matteo Spinelli è nato in una Milano ricca di fermenti culturali ed artistici ed in fase di rapida crescita economica e di trasformazione urbanistica, da una famiglia dedita all'arte ed alla collezione di pezzi di antiquariato. Maturò presto la sua passione per l'arte ed in particolar modo per la pittura. Nel 1929 ha frequentato l'Accademia Ambrosiana diretta dai pittori Ferri e Marussig e dallo scultore Bortolati, ma dopo breve tempo, forse perché lo costringevano sempre a dipingere nature morte, disgustato, decise di proseguire da solo, perché voleva dipingere "persone e scene di vita". Frequentò così le Gallerie d'Arte di Milano e specialmente la Galleria Milano. dove vide e conobbe tutti i pittori italiani del '900, da Tosi a Sironi, De Pisis, De Chirico ed altri. Conobbe e studiò, sempre da autodidatta, anche "i pittori di Parigi", visitando mostre di Cezanne, Renoir, ecc.; ma i pittori da lui prediletti furono comunque Matisse, per i suoi colori marcati, Modigliani per la sua "linea plastica" e Rouault per la potenza delle sue immagini. Nel 1945 fu molto vicino a Sironi, sfollato a Bellagio per la guerra. Nel frattempo ha continuato con entusiasmo la tradizione di famiglia, occupandosi del negozio di antiquariato. La sua smania di lavorare ed operare, che sentiva quasi come un dovere di esprimere e di collezionare concretamente le sue sensazioni e il suo pensiero attraverso la produzione delle sue opere, era accompagnato da uno spirito libertario che lo portava a cercare e a trovare una piena libertà di stile e di materiali, talvolta con l'improvvisazione, utilizzando ogni tipo di materiale a portata di mano. Anche la poesia è stata per lui un mezzo di espressione e di sfogo della sua ricerca artistica. In questo libro sono riportate le poesie, soprattutto degli anni '20, '30 e '40, il periodo più aperto alla sperimentazione puramente poetica, dapprima esercitata con spavalda sicurezza nella descrizione dei sentimenti ispiratori, fino alla morte del primo figlio, che contempla con accorato sgomento; negli anni seguenti il suo impegno si è concentrato poi sempre di più sull'arte figurativa.
