About the Book

Justo Zaragoza (1833-1896) fue secretario del gobierno político de La Habana y oficial del cuerpo de Voluntarios en la misma ciudad. Su obra más importante, Las insurrecciones en Cuba. Apuntes para la historia política de esta isla en el presente siglo, se publicó en Madrid en 1872. En ella, Zaragoza defiende el concepto de la Integridad Nacional. Según dicho concepto, Cuba era parte inseparable del territorio de España, y tratar de independizarla equivalía a atentar contra la nación y la patria españolas. Por ello, precisamente, su defensa de Juan Clemente Zenea, fusilado por el gobierno colonial de La Habana bajo la acusación de traición contra España, es la primera reivindicación del poeta cubano, quien parece haber sido víctima de una compleja traición múltiple, urdida por quienes -españoles o cubanos- se oponían a la misión de mediación pacificadora con la cual viajó en 1870 desde Nueva York al campo insurrecto, comisionado por el ministro de Ultramar de España para entrevistarse con el presidente de la República de Cuba en Armas, Carlos Manuel de Céspedes. Sorprendido por fuerzas españolas -en lo que pudo haber sido una emboscada urdida mediante una delación- Zenea fue hecho prisionero, cuando se proponía regresar a los Estados Unidos, en una playa del norte de Camagüey, enviado a La Habana, encarcelado en el tenebroso castillo de La Cabaña y -al cabo de un largo proceso durante el cual se le negó la libertad ordenada en su favor por el gobierno de Madrid- fue condenado a muerte, sentencia que se ejecutó el 25 de agosto de 1871. En su opúsculo Poesías póstumas del malogrado poeta Juan Clemente Zenea (Madrid, 1871, Justo Zaragoza niega la razón y la justicia del proceso judicial que condujo al fusilamiento de Zenea, y lo hace desde la posición de un español plenamente identificado con el concepto de la Integridad Nacional. Pero su indignación ante la muerte de Zenea va más allá de una impugnación con inobjetables bases morales: es la indignación de un hombre justo ante el asesinato "legal" de quien era, por sobre todas las posiciones políticas, un poeta cuya obra honraba al país en el que había nacido -Cuba- y a la cultura en cuya lengua hablaba y escribía: la cultura hispana. La reedición facsimilar de esta obra no sólo se dedica a la memoria de Juan Clemente Zenea, sino a la de su autor, Justo Zaragoza, quien le hizo honor a su nombre en medio de circunstancias políticas y sociales que hicieron perder el sentido de justicia a muchos de sus conciudadanos, tanto cubanos como españoles. Y a manera de epílogo, se reproduce aquí el valioso testimonio de la última persona que pudo hablar directamente con Zenea, el día antes de su ejecución, sin verse ambos sometidos a la censura de los carceleros coloniales: Henry C. Hall, cónsul en La Habana de los Estados Unidos de América, país del que Zenea era ciudadano. Fue Hall quien recibió de manos del poeta y salvó las páginas que después se publicarían en Nueva York como el Diario de un mártir, y quien recogió en su informe la declaración final de Zenea, solo y esforzadamente valeroso ante la inminencia de una muerte urdida por la traición: He met his fate with extraordinary fortitude.
