About the Book

Lucy has been reading, writing and listening to poetry for over eighty years! She's long wanted to publish her original poems so that people all over the world might have the chance to share them. From her love for her family to her clever description of the DNA genetic code, to her tactics of dealing with distress with a smile, Lucy has a clever, insightful rhyme for most situations you'll find.
About the Author: Lucille Falk Miller writes: "Never in my wildest dreams did I think my life would be this exciting." As a young girl staring at the vast South Dakota horizon, wanting to see the world, she only knew life on the farm during the Depression. Though extrememly challenging, she remembered her family's love, determination, curiosity and appreciation. Economic chaos from The Depression, drought, infestations of grasshoppers and failed crops caused them to lose their farm. Rather than sucumbing to to defeat, they packed up squeezing her father, mother, sister and all the boxes they could fit into their old car. Hugging tearful grandparents goodbye, they left to search for work, stopping in Minneapolis. South Dakota relatives drove there begging them to stay rather than heading to Florida. Although unemployment was extreme, her father finally succeeded in getting hired by showing up every day at a construction site with his lunch box, standing there all day long, watching them. When they eventually needed extra help, they figured he had watched long enough to know what to do. Infused with that same fortitude and ingenuity, Lucy was not afraid of hard work, always going the extra mile for her family and those in need while still finding the joy and poetry in both simple and complex moments. She married her Marine Corps fiancé when he was home on leave from WWII and they moved to California. He soon had to return to the 'Pacific Theater' for combat responsibilities and Lucy started working in a factory line with her 'Rosie the Riveter' cohorts. After the war they returned to Minneapolis and Lucy began putting herself through college, giving to birth to their first daughter while earning her MSW. First in her family to earn an advanced degree, she shared her compassion and grit as a social worker with the Hennepin County Welfare Board, then later with the Minneapolis Public Schools. While working full time as a school social worker, involving her three children in a variety of activities, working part time at the American Red Cross, she also co-founded the Neighborhood Involvement Program [NIP]. Once retired, she held leadership roles in many service organizations. Her poetry has been published in newsletters and frequently she is invited to read her poems publically. Her family, friends and clients have always loved her clever wit and caring ways, everywhere evident in Poems By Lucy.
