¿Cuáles son los orígenes de la crisis del orden colonial? ¿Qué llevó a que, tras la invasión napoleónica a la península ibérica, el dominio español en América comenzara a desmoronarse? Para responder estos interrogantes, este libro reconstruye los cambios en las formas de hacer política en Chuquisaca (hoy Sucre, Bolivia) durante las décadas que precedieron al alzamiento general de la ciudad, en mayo de 1809. Principal centro de actividad intelectual del virreinato del Río de la Plata en el siglo XVIII, su vecindario presenció encarnizados litigios contra los mandatarios regios, recurrentes cabildos abiertos, la férrea defensa de la autonomía del claustro universitario, modernos mecanismos de petición colectiva, copiosos libelos anónimos y violentos motines populares. Asistimos, así, a la conformación de vigorosos espacios públicos de debate sobre asuntos de Estado.

Sergio Serulnikov es Director del Departamento de Humanidades de la Universidad de San Andrés e investigador del CONICET. Es Licenciado en Historia por la Universidad de Buenos Aires y Doctor por la State University of New York. Es autor, entre otros libros, de Conflictos sociales e insurgencia en el mundo colonial andino. El norte de Potosí, siglo XVIII (Fondo de Cultura Económica, 2006) y Revolución en los Andes. La era de Túpac Amaru (Editorial Sudamericana, 2010), ambas obras editadas en inglés por Duke University Press.
