About the Book

'A Pleasant Place' is a difficult book to read, and it is especially hard for those who lack familiarity with reading intensively between the lines. The level of vitriolic sarcasm can be scathing to a level repellent to a sensitive audience. This book is not suitable for readers who expect or demand that ever character all the time thinks, speaks, and acts in accordance with political correctness, or that the author explicitly such thinking, speaking, and acting by clear and definitively negative comments. 'A Pleasant Place' contains lots of detailed descriptions of anti-social behaviour and discriminative talk and actions without immediately and explicitly condemning these. Here especially the ability to read between the lines is important, and the skill in understanding irony and sarcasm. This book will hardly be enjoyed by readers who prefer generally agreed ethics to be given to them by broad hints. As the books described indulging into alcoholism and abuse of alkaloids in fairy great detail and frequency without always condemning it right away and without every of the characters succumbing to it, 'A Pleasant Place' is not suitable for immature readers and for an audience that could be easily led astray. Despite the lack of explicit description of sexuality in great detail, and its shortage of detail-rich indulgence into extreme violence, it is rather not suitable for pre-adult readers. Furthermore, the book's language and grammar are complicated and the vocabulary includes rarely used terms, and so the experienced and frequent reader might find it less of an assembly of stumbling blocks than the casual book-buyer. 'A Pleasant Place' is an extensive exercise in 'World Building' and includes long descriptions. It is much more Social Science Fiction than Technical Science Fiction, and featuring only a comparatively slim amount of technology talk. At the same time, the main characters and the circumstances of their lives are described in great detail. The book does contain some action, too, but the vast majority of the pages are filled with scenes rather falling into the social sphere, including telling about the so-called inner life of the characters. This book could be the right reading stuff for an audience with lots of time, a preference for reading slow, a dark-humoured taste for vitriolic sarcasm, an understanding for irony close to the level where it hurts, an at least as-pronounced dislike for political correctness and the current fashion of most contemporary science fiction, and a far-above-average ability to read between the lines. This books is certainly not entertaining for those who frequently experience their disposition to be easily outraged, indignant, and who only want to see entirely politically correct stories written. This books definitively requires maturity to be enjoyed - if at all, because it is a rather difficult piece to read. When summing it up, one may even say that the majority of readers would be better served by looking for something else, for this novel here is catering to a niche market only.
