La fiesta de los torosLa fiesta de los toros, llegó a Jalisco, de la mano misma de los conquistadores españoles. Junto con el idioma y junto con la religión católica; la costumbre arraigada en el pueblo español de correr toros bravos se afianzó en México y se afianzó en Jalisco que entonces, era la provincia de la Nueva Galicia. Jalisco es actualmente, el estado de la República Mexicana que cuenta con el mayor número de municipios en donde se dan festejos y se tienen registradas por lo menos cuarenta edificios construido es profeso (plazas de toros). Sin contar la gran cantidad de lienzos charros y plazas de trancas en donde se celebran corridas con motivos religiosos como lo son las fiestas patronales y los festejos del día de La Candelaria y el carnaval.Asimismo, Jalisco posee un amplio catálogo de fincas ganaderas dedicadas específicamente a la crianza de toros de lidia y por si fuera poco, cuenta en la actualidad con una amplia baraja de matadores de toros en activo.Plazas de torosLegado de los españoles en su paso por América, son las plazas mayores en donde concurren simbólicamente los poderes.La iglesia o catedral, el palacio de gobierno y las casas consistoriales.Francisco López Izquierdo Madrid: 1992, nos comenta en el prólogo de su interesante libro Plazas Mayores y de Toros al respecto: "Cuando las corridas fueron regocijo público y antes deporte parcialmente caballeresco en las plazas de armas, se dieron en las plazas públicas, acondicionadas con tablados, sirviendo las ventanas y balcones para contemplarlas. Era costoso ese procedimiento, carente de seguridad para el espectador por hundimiento y peligroso por las posibilidades de incendio. La plaza cuadrada o rectangular tenía el inconveniente de que los toros se aquerenciaran en los rincones, por lo que, a veces, se mataban aquellos rincones, resultando el terreno de la lid, de forma octogonal" López Izquierdo hace que nos detengamos a reflexionar en el devenir de los espacios acondicionados para el toreo. Un espacio de forma rectangular que adquiere ochavas, pasa por el esquema trapezoidal de ocho lados, hasta adquirir la forma actual de la circunferencia. De la misma manera, la traza urbana de herencia romana, se adecua a las nuevas ciudades americanas. De nueva cuenta tomo en préstamo las palabras de López Izquierdo."Inquietudes urbanísticas hubo en la fundación de las ciudades de América. En las leyes de Indias se dictan previsiones de cómo habían de ser y dónde las Plazas Mayores, suficientes para celebrar en ellas fiestas de toros y juegos de cañas: abiertas en las poblaciones marítimas hacia el desembarcadero y en el centro del poblado en las no marítimas y 'que por lo menos tenga de largo una vez y media de ancho, porque será más a propósito para las fiestas de a caballo y otras'".Dentro del esquema que corresponde a la traza hispana, es impensable la ausencia de la circunferencia de una plaza de toros, como parte equilibrante y armónica citadina.De la misma forma, su no presencia simboliza la decadencia de una urbe que manifiesta nuevas prerrogativas y su dirección hacia otras motivaciones, ajenas por completo a la tradición llegada en una carabela que algún día partió de Cádiz hacia el nuevo mundo.
