Platon hat seine Ideenlehre nicht in einem systematischen Zusammenhang dargelegt, sie muss daher aus verschiedenen Stellen seiner Werke zusammengetragen werden. Die Ideenlehre bildet das Fundament und den Kerngedanke des platonischen Denkens, und war für Platon selbst keineswegs selbstverständlich, was besonders in seinen Spätdialogen ersichtlicht wird. Platon hat fast alle Bereiche der Philosophie diskutiert: Ethik, politische Philosophie, Metaphysik, Ontologie etc. Die Ideenlehre liegt allen Bereichen der Philosophie Platons zu Grunde. Sie ist kein unverändertes Ganzes, das als theoretisches Konzept in der gleichen Form durch die gesamte Philosophie Platons hindurch bestehen bleibt, sondern wird seinem Gedankengang entsprechend weiter entwickelt. Eines bleibt jedoch unveränderlich: Die Ideenlehre ist Platons Suche nach dem einzigen und einenden Grund zugleich. (...) Für das platonische Verständnis der Idee lassen sich keine klaren Definitionen aus den Dialogen herausschälen. Man findet dort verstreut nur Aussagen, Erwähnungen und teilweise auch nur Gedanken, die Ideen implizieren. Es steht also nicht nur zu Debatte, ob Platons Aussagen über Ideen eine reelle Wahrheit treffen, sondern auch immer schon der eigentliche Inhalt seiner Darlegungen und deren Status. Platons Spätdialoge Parmenides und Sophistes haften in diesem Bezug eine Besonderheit an. Sie setzen sich in expliziter und kritischer Weise mit dem Konzept der platonischen Idee auseinander.
