Generally, the types of vegetable foods eaten depend on the particular variety of religious/cultural beliefs, region, and personal preference.

This type of diet can reduce obesity risk because meat contains high levels of saturated fat, whereas plant foods generally contain little or none. Additionally, a plant-based diet increases intake of fiber, vitamins C and E, folic acid, potassium, magnesium, phytochemicals such as flavonoids and carotenoids, and many other nutrients that are essential to health. A plant-based diet is usually higher in dietary fiber and lower in total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and added sugar than a no vegetarian diet. These nutritional characteristics are associated with a reduced risk of several chronic diseases common in Western countries. A plant-based diet may also help to prevent or treat certain conditions including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and osteoporosis.

In the Western world, a plant-based diet is traditionally associated with vegetarianism, but more recently has been promoted as a more humane alternative by advocates and as a way to reduce animal suffering by proponents of animal rights.
