About the Book

Louis-Édouard Pollet, alias Michel Corday, né à Paris le 12 septembre 1869 et mort le 12 janvier 1937 à Serbonnes (Yonne), est un romancier français. Biographie Il fut d'abord élève de l'École polytechnique; il quitta cette dernière pour l'école de Fontainebleau, en 1890. Il reçut les grades de sous-lieutenant, puis de lieutenant du génie, en garnison à Versailles. Il démissionna de l'armée en 1894 pour se consacrer à l'écriture . Ses débuts littéraires furent heureux et productifs, d'abord dans le journal Gil Blas, puis au Gaulois, au Journal, à la Vie Parisienne, où il écrit une série plaisante et de curieuses études sur la vie des officiers en caserne; ces écrits furent plus tard, réunies en volumes. Dès lors commença vraiment sa carrière littéraire avec une série de romans: Mariés jeunes!, en 1896, puis avec Confession d'un enfant du siège, dont le titre parodie celui du fameux roman de Musset, en 1897. Il fonde Le Lys Rouge, groupement des admirateurs d'Anatole France, en 1932 . Il possédait, à Serbonnes, une maison de campagne, dans laquelle il vivait de grandes périodes de l'année. Qu'est-ce? Une attaque? Voilà justement l'endroit où le fameux Courrier de Lyon... Mais non. Un simple éclatement de pneu. A la roue arrière droite. Déjà le mécanicien ouvre les coffres, jette sur la route les leviers, le cric, la pompe, la chambre neuve. -Combien de temps? interroge Monsieur. -Vingt bonnes minutes. Juste assez pour pousser une pointe sous bois. Qu'en dit Madame? Madame bat des mains. Fameuse idée. Et les voilà partis à travers la futaie de platanes et d'érables. Dans l'herbe fine, les premières feuilles mortes craquent sous leurs pieds. Elles ont le ton, elles font le bruit de ces gâteaux légers que les enfants appellent du plaisir ou des oublies. Les arbres jettent les uns vers les autres leurs branches éplorées qui se mêlent et s'étreignent comme des bras d'amants. Toute la forêt n'est qu'un enlacement. Elle semble murmurer, dans le calme et la solitude propices: Faites comme moi: ne soyez qu'une caresse. Et les feuilles piquées dans l'herbe murmurent aussi: Nous sommes l'oublie et le plaisir. Venez à nous. Mais comment donc!... Quand ils débouchent vivement sur la route, pressés par la crainte du retard, le mécanicien n'a même pas achevé de regonfler son pneu. Il donne les derniers coups de pompe.
