La Yale University Art Gallery di New Haven (CT), USA, è il museo d'arte dell'Università di Yale, una delle più gloriose università d'America che assieme allo Yale Center for British Art ed al Peabody Museum, costituisce uno dei maggiori complessi culturali americani con opere d'arte americane e straniere tra le più importanti esistenti; la Yale University Art Gallery è il più antico museo universitario d'America e tra i più vecchi dell'emisfero occidentale, si trova al margine Sud dell'area universitaria, alle spalle dell'Old Campus, la parte più antica di tutto il centro universitario ed è attorniata dagli edifici in stile georgiano e neogotico dell'università, quasi dirimpetto sorge il Center for British Art; due edifici affiancati e contigui, il primo del 1928 è opera dell'architetto E. Swartwout ricalcando le forme di un palazzo gotico di Viterbo, il secondo, del 1953, rappresenta la prima importante realizzazione del famoso architetto L. I. Kahn che insegnò architettura a Yale; un restauro completo restituì molti spazi della visione originale di Kahn e fu completato nel 2006 dagli Architetti dell'Associazione di Polshek, la Galleria riaprì nel 2012 dopo un progetto di espansione e di restauro di 14 anni a un costo di $135 milioni con 69.975 piedi quadrati totali in più di spazio d'esposizione ottenuti; all'interno un museo d'arte a carattere enciclopedico con più di 185.000 oggetti e per quanto ci riguarda le belle collezioni di arti figurative e decorative europee e americane, moderne e contemporanee; troviamo il XIX secolo inglese, nella rigida Inghilterra vittoriana, periodo di contrasti ove lo sviluppo industriale faceva coesistere floridezza economica e la devastante miseria di una manodopera sfruttata descritta nei romanzi di Dickens, prendevano corpo rivoluzioni artistiche quasi conservatrici come l'Aesthetic Movement: sir L. A. Tadema, F. Leighton, A. J. Moore, E. J. Poynter, E. Burne-Jones, J. W. Godward, A. Hughes e A. Moore, ben presto dimenticati e denigrati, come d'altra parte la Confraternita dei Preraffaelliti: W. Hunt, J. Millais, J. Ruskin e D. Rossetti, destinati a disgregarsi ma continuando ad influenzare l'arte inglese per oltre 50 anni; nell'Ottocento, tuttavia, in molti paesi anglosassoni e soprattutto i pittori inglesi trovano, ormai pienamente, nuova fonte di ispirazione dai sentimenti che provavano nel contemplare la natura nella sua immensa bellezza; col Naturalismo e lo Scientismo alcuni restano fedeli alle solite regole formali di come si raffiguri un paesaggio, altri, invece, le stravolgono per esprimersi con linguaggio nuovo, più personale e appassionato; come per il tedesco C. D. Friedrich (1774-1840), trovando una sensazione di vera e propria comunione mistico-religiosa nei suoi paesaggi spiritualizzati e interiorizzati, simbolo di una solitudine di cui l'uomo ha quasi bisogno affinché possa interrogarsi, aspirare all'infinito e quindi attraverso la Natura arrivare a Dio.
