About the Author: R. Steven Thompson is a descendant of American pioneers who emigrated to the American West to settle in what is now known as the Magic Valley of Southern Idaho. He makes his home with his wife, Donna Daywoman Thompson "off the grid" on his parents 40 acre homestead. While growing up on his family's farm, he got a taste of pioneer life as he slopped hogs, milked cows, bucked hay, and rode his mare he affectionately called "babe". Thompson is a writer, author, photographer and outdoor enthusiast. Thompson likes Dutch Oven cooking; he also enjoys dishes and meals his wife, Donna, prepares from the very recipes within this book. Researching, compiling and writing this Pioneer Cook Book offered Thompson a time machine back to days on the family farm, when as a teenager he was transplanted from town. He slopped the pigs, herded a small head of cattle, milked a cow, repaired his share of fences, and owned his very own horse. It took him back to his childhood days at his grandma's house. "As I worked on this book I visited such places as the Silent City of Rocks and Castle Rocks in the southern-most region of the great state of Idaho. My wife, Donna, and I along with our two grandkids -- Liberty & Alieus -- enjoyed camping in a yurt on Smokey Mountain at the Castle Rocks State Park. There, we cooked our meals outdoors, prepared from some of the recipes archived in this book. "We also traveled across Granite Pass of the California Pioneer Trail, and we drove past old pioneer apple orchards and what remains of old homestead sites and cabins. All of those adventures helped energize me to work on and complete this book. "I hope you enjoy the recipes. I hope these pages inspire you and bring back your own tender memories of precious days gone by."
