About the Book

Connal Lee's hillbilly Maw gave him birth the first week of February, 1845, named him, then died. His drunken Paw abused the boy and his older brother and sister. By the time Connal Lee turned twelve, his father became real mean. The kids escaped and walked to Independence where they met a man heading up a handcart company. They heard of the California gold rush and decided to go west to seek their fortunes. They left the end of July, 1857, pushing a handcart across the Overland Trail. They were used to fresh meat in the Ozarks, so they hunted in the evenings. A school teacher from London started classes and taught Connal Lee how to read, write, and speak proper English. Connal Lee grew to love his teacher and her husband. He asked them to be his foster parents. They agreed. The Overland Trail teemed with adventures. Dangerous weather. A huge herd of buffalo stopped them. Warriors of the Pawnee Nation demanded a toll to cross their lands. The handcart company spent a week at Scotts Bluff sick with cholera. Several died. In Fort Laramie, Connal Lee met Captain Reed of the Cavalry who came to Hecall him Little Brother. After a hard uphill climb, they crossed the Continental Divide. Connal Lee couldn't find game in the barren desert, so he offered to ride out away from the trail during the day. Shortly after the Divide, a pack of Crow warriors attacked. He was out hunting when they shot him in the leg. He pulled the arrow free then passed out. The next day a Shoshone family, an apprentice War Chief, apprentice medicine man, and apprentice shaman girl found him. They treated his wounds and fed him. He couldn't travel by myself, so he accompanied them and learned to speak Shoshone. One day their warrior didn't return from spying on the Crows. Connal Lee tracked him to where he was held captive, shot the Crows, and freed him. The warrior adopted Connal Lee as his brother. Then they all adopted each other. They finally joined Chief Arimo in time to accompany his clan down to Great Salt Lake City for their annual fur trading expedition. On the way south, the great Chief adopted Connal Lee. Chief Arimo introduced the boy to his friend, Governor Brigham Young. The friendship with the Shoshone family grew into love. They asked him to share their tipi - which meant join them in marriage. He was overjoyed. The next spring, Major Harris of the Nauvoo Legion brought an invitation to Chief Arimo to join Governor Young as allies in welcoming the new Territorial Governor during the Utah War. The Chief sent Connal Lee's family as his delegates. And thus, the adventure began.
