The story behind the crime that shook Brazilian press world: the murder of economy reporter Sandra Gomide commited by Pimenta Neves, director of country's most traditional newspaper. No dia 20 de agosto de 2000, o diretor de redação do jornal O Estado de S. Paulo, Antônio Pimenta Neves, de 63 anos, matou a namorada Sandra Florentino Gomide, editora da área econômica, de 32, com um tiro nas costas e outro na cabeça, quando ela se preparava para montar o cavalo Oceano, no Haras Setti em Ibiúna. O assassinato de Sandra marcou também o fim da carreira extraordinariamente bem-sucedida de Pimenta Neves e foi amplamente coberto pela imprensa nacional. Passados 12 anos do crime, com o criminoso finalmente cumprindo sua pena em Tremembé, no interior de São Paulo, havia ainda muito a desvendar sobre a vida do jornalista: seu relacionamento com Sandra, as origens de ambos e os fatos que culminaram com a tragédia conhecida de todos. Em Pimenta Neves - Uma Reportagem, não apenas são detalhadas as circunstâncias do crime, mas traçado um relato biográfico daquele que o cometeu. Com base em extensa pesquisa, acesso aos documentos do processo e do julgamento, e cerca de 100 entrevistas (algumas no exterior), foi recuperada sua trajetória de vida, do berço familiar em Batatais e Araraquara - onde o jornalista iniciou amizades de toda a vida com personalidades da vida cultural como Ignácio de Loyola Brandão, José Celso Martinez Corrêa e tantos mais - à sua vivência em importantes redações - inclusive como correspondente do Estadão na Brasília recém-inaugurada, ao lado de Vladimir Herzog -, e suas experiências como correspondente internacional e diretor do Banco Mundial, em Washington. O livro conta ainda como foram as primeiras 24 horas após o crime, revela quem abrigou Pimenta Neves na primeira noite como foragido - informações que até hoje não haviam chegado ao público - e o primeiro período de prisão, em que dividiu a cela com o Atirador do Cinema, Mateus da Costa Meira, com o juiz Nicolau (Lalau) e o vereador Vicente Viscome, condenado por chefiar a Máfia dos Fiscais de São Paulo. Entre as revelações levantadas no texto estão uma tragédia familiar vivida na infância e episódios anteriores de agressões a mulheres - inclusive da norte-americana Carole, de quem se divorciou -, que demonstram não ter sido um rompante passional o fator que desencadeou o assassinato, como pretendeu demonstrar sua defesa. Alguns dos psiquiatras mais conceituados na área forense, como Guido Palomba, ou de violência contra a mulher, como Taty Ades, foram chamados a opinar e a traçar um possível perfil psicológico do protagonista desse caso. O texto traz ainda reflexões do próprio Pimenta Neves, obtidas com exclusividade, numa quebra do silêncio quase total a que se impõs desde o crime, interrompido até agora apenas por um encontro com o repórter Vicente Vilardaga, da revista Alfa, em outubro de 2010. A vida de Sandra Gomide e a de sua família, antes e depois do crime, os reflexos do escândalo à imagem do Estadão e as repercussões junto ao clã Mesquita também são aspectos abordados na narrativa. O livro teve duas edições anteriores esgotadas e foi finalista do Prêmio Jabuti 2014 - o mais importante da literatura brasileira - na categoria Reportagem, em disputa na qual o vencedor foi '1889', de Laurentino Gomes. Sobre o autor: Luiz Octavio de Lima é jornalista, nascido no Rio de Janeiro em 1959, formado pela PUC-RJ e com MBA em Economia. Atuou nas redações de O Globo, Folha de S. Paulo, Veja, O Estado de S. Paulo, Época e Exame. No Estadão integrou a primeira equipe de internet, desde 1994. Atualmente dirige uma empresa de comunicação.
