Aquí nos cuenta cómo fue posible conseguir una especie de pequeño milagro de la enseñanza gracias al trabajo en equipo de varios profesionales, los cuales, por diferentes razones, colaboraron con el fin de abrir las puertas del conocimiento a un grupo de alumnos especialmente desaventajados y poco motivados. Los hechos y las circunstancias que se cuentan fueron la excusa perfecta para poner a prueba una de las teorías psicológicas más eficaces a la hora de mejorar el rendimiento de alumnos de cualquier nivel escolar: el efecto Pigmalión, también conocido como la profecía autocumplida; en ambos casos estamos hablando de la comunicación de altas expectativas. Rosenthal y Jacobson fueron los primeros en estudiarlas y experimentarlas en el ámbito educativo; después de ellos, muchos otros psicólogos se dedicaron a individuar los aspectos de la interacción entre maestro y alumno que más influyen en los resultados escolares de este último y el resultado fue la clasificación de unas conductas docentes específicas que vehiculan estas altas expectativas. Sin embargo, se descubrió también que los profesores no siempre las ponían en práctica con todos y cada uno sus alumnos, en especial modo con los que percibían de bajo rendimiento. Con el fin de obviar este problema, existen técnicas muy eficaces, y de fácil aplicación a la práctica diaria en el aula, que favorecen la comunicación de altas expectativas indistintamente a todos los estudiantes. Naturalmente, algunas de ellas fueron las que se pusieron en marcha para lograr los resultados abrumadores que se cuentan en este libro, demostrando una vez más el poder que la opinión del docente tiene sobre su alumnado.
