About the Author: Nikolaus von Kues kommt 1401 im heutigen Bernkastel-Kues zur Welt. Nach kurzem Studium der freien Künste in Heidelberg widmet er sich an der Universität Padua dem Kirchenrecht. Nach der Priesterweihe um 1440 wird Nikolaus 1448 zum Kardinal ernannt. 1433 verfaßt Nikolaus auf dem Basler Konzil seine erste grundlegende Schrift De concordantia catholica, in der er als Jurist und Theologe eine neue Ekklesiologie, eine allgemeine Konzils- und Staatstheorie sowie eine darauf aufbauende Reichsreform entwirft. Die erste von Nikolaus zur Veröffentlichung bestimmte philosophisch-theologische Schrift De docta ignorantia ist grundlegend für das Verständnis seines Denkens. Hier entwickelt er seinen berühmt gewordenen Begriff der "coincidentia oppositorum" der theologisch von der Suche nach Gott und philosophisch von der Jagd nach Weisheit geleitet ist. Mit der Einsicht in das Nichtwissen des Wissens distanziert sich Nikolaus von der ontologisch bedingten Erkenntnismetaphysik der Hochscholastik, um ein neuzeitliches Wahrheitsverständnis zu begründen. Nikolaus von Kues verbringt die letzten sechs Jahre seines Lebens am Hofe des Papstes in Rom und stirbt 1464.
