Weisheit und wahre Vortrefflichkeit bedingen einander oder sind sogar miteinander identisch. Im antiken Denken war diese Vorstellung weit verbreitet. Aber wie ist sie entstanden? Von wem und in welchem sozialen und diskursiven Kontext ist sie hervorgebracht worden?

Katarina Nebelin betrachtet die antike Philosophie als soziale Praxis und intellektuelle Tatigkeit und setzt sie ins Verhaltnis zu den sozialen Praktiken und Vortrefflichkeitsvorstellungen der aristokratischen Oberschicht. Beides stand in vielfaltigen und komplexen Beziehungen, die von Anfang an gepragt waren von einer bedingten Unabhangigkeit beziehungsweise einer relativen Autonomie. Aristokratische Verhaltensweisen und Uberzeugungen bildeten den gesellschaftlichen Hintergrund, vor dem sich die antike Philosophie zu einer autonomen Disziplin ausdifferenzierte und institutionalisierte. Dennoch determinierte das aristokratische Moment weder Formen noch Inhalte der Philosophie. Die Studie wirft damit neues Licht auf den Entstehungsprozess der antiken Philosophie, von den Vorsokratikern bis zur Platonischen Grenzziehung.


About the Author: Katarina Nebelin studierte Alte Geschichte, Philosophie und Politikwissenschaft in Greifswald und Dresden. Sie war am Exzellenzcluster "Religion und Politik" der Universitat Munster tatig und ist gegenwartig wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Lehrstuhl fur Alte Geschichte der Universitat Rostock. Ihre Arbeitsschwerpunkte sind die politische Ideengeschichte der Antike sowie die Kulturgeschichte des Politischen, vor allem der athenischen Demokratie und der romischen Republik.
