Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2009 im Fachbereich Rhetorik / Phonetik / Sprechwissenschaft, Note: 1,0, Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen, Veranstaltung: Allgemeine Rhetorik, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Billy Graham - mit diesem Namen verbindet sich viel, Kontroversen wie Superlative. Laut Auskunft der Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) hat er während seiner Zeit als Evangelist vor fast 215 Millionen Menschen in mehr als 185 Ländern gesprochen, ganz zu schweigen von denen, die ihn über Fernsehen und Satellitenübertragung sahen. 48 mal, laut einer Gallup Studie, wurde er unter die zehn am meisten bewunderten Männer der USA gewählt. Er erhielt unzählige Auszeichnungen und Preise und wurde u.a. 1999 erstes Mitglied der Gospel Music Hall of Fame - als Nichtmusiker, wohlgemerkt. Angesichts dieser Zahlen ist es erstaunlich, daß es im deutschsprachigen Raum keine Untersuchungen zu Graham gibt, weder aus theologischer noch aus soziologischer, geschweige denn aus rhetorischer Perspektive. Dabei haben Grahams Evangelisationen in Deutschland - zwischen 1954 und 1993 - nicht nur die deutsche Kirchen-, sondern auch die Medienlandschaft geprägt. Dies trifft wohl vor allem für die Euro '70 in Dortmund zu, die in dieser Form erste und bis dato einzigartige massenmediale Veranstaltung in Deutschland. Nicht zuletzt haben sich an der Person Grahams und seinem Predigtstil viele Gemüter erhitzt, uneins darüber, wie man einem so charismatischen, erfolgreichen Redner gegenüberstehen solle - vor allem in Deutschland, das ja nun aus historischen Gründen ein sehr zwiespältiges Verhältnis zu solchen Rednern hat. Man fragt sich also mit Wolf von Lojewski: "Was ist das Besondere an Billy Graham?" Diese Frage mit "seine Rhetorik" zu beantworten, ist wohl kaum zufriedenstellend, auch wenn viele sich offensichtlich bislang damit abgefunden haben.
