Llegan a Sevilla, después de tres meses y medio de tan penoso éxodo, que morirían dos cadetes, después de quedarse en el hospital de Orense, a causa de las enfermedades contraídas durante el viaje.El gran amor hacia su familia, permaneciendo al lado de su marido, cuando en esta ciudad le comunican el secuestro de todos sus bienes por los franceses, ante la disyuntiva de seguir con él perdiéndolo todo o regresar a Segovia donde le restituirían sus propiedades.Su gran coraje, cuando su marido se retira a la Isla de León por la inminente ocupación francesa de Sevilla y ella tiene que quedarse en la ciudad por estar embarazada y no poder seguirle. Encontrándose en la miseria, es acogida en la Casa de Niños Expósitos, se enfrenta a los afrancesados, que pretendían que llamara a su esposo para unirse a su innoble causa, y cuando da a luz, como no le permiten salir de la ciudad, urde una trama para reunirse con él burlando los controles franceses de Sevilla y el cerco a la Isla de León.De nuevo realiza otra épica huida, llena de sobresaltos, hasta llegar a la Isla de León, con otro niño de pecho, seis pequeños más y sus dos amas. En la huida le lleva a su marido unos documentos que le entregan sobre las actividades francesas en la Fundición de San Bernardo, a sabiendas del riesgo que corre si lo descubren los franceses y la acusan de espía.Cuando al fin logra su sueño, de una vida en paz junto a su familia, su marido fallece. Petra acusa a los franceses de ello, por el gran esfuerzo que realizó para combatirlos, adiestrando de urgencia a universitarios para oficiales del ejército en la Academia Militar que creó en Sevilla y después restableció en la Isla de León. Petra, viuda y en la mayor pobreza, víctima de la guerra y del amor, regresa a Segovia al terminar la contienda con ocho hijos, sin que pudiera dejarles los bienes materiales que por su cuna les correspondían, más les dejaría impreso en sus corazones el bello sentimiento del amor por la familia y por la Patria.
