Plus un mot historique reflète exactement la physionomie morale de son auteur présumé, plus ce mot a des chances d'être faux, prévient encore Gaubert qui, parmi ces slogans publicitaires, inventés après coup et taillés à la mesure exacte des grands personnages , nous montre comment - et cependant que parfois l'histoire anecdotique n'aime souvent guère mettre en scène des personnages secondaires - les historiens se sont entendus comme larrons en foire pour tromper le public et égarer son jugement.
