Dies geschieht schneller denn je. Nicht nur für Großunternehmen ist Internationalisierung also ein wichtiger Prozess, auch KMU beschäftigen sich zusehends mit "Going International". Die generelle Globalisierung vieler Branchen und Beschränktheit des Heimatmarktes machen es möglich und z.T. auch notwendig, dass KMU international vertreten sind. Ist die Entscheidung für die Internationalisierung gefallen, gibt es verschiedene Zielmärkte bzw. Länder, in die gegangen werden soll. Die verschiedenen Motive der Internationalisierung und die damit verbundene Strategie nehmen dabei eine zentrale Rolle ein. Wichtige Entscheidungen über die Form des Auslandsengagements und die Geschwindigkeit der Internationalisierung sind so unterschiedlich wie die Unternehmung selbst. Sie erfordern Handeln der Führungskräfte fernab von bekannten Arbeitsschemen, aber möglicherweise auch andere Denkweisen als die bekannten Internationalisierungsschemen es suggerieren, wie Bloodgood, Sapienza, Almeida für neu gegründete US-Unternehmen feststellten. Hin und wieder finden sich bei KMU auch noch Firmengründer oder deren Nachfahren im Top Management. Sie haben traditionell einen großen Einfluss auf Entscheidungsfindung jeglicher Art.
