La version originale anglaise est illustrée par C. E. Brock (Ed. 1909). Volume 6 dans la Série: Les Six Grands Romans de Jane Austen - Édition Bilingue Annotée et Illustrée (Français / Anglais).A propos de la Série: -Volume 1: Raison et Sensibilité (Les Deux Manières d'Aimer.) / Sense and Sensibility (1811). -Volume 2: Orgueil et Préjugés (Les Cinq Filles de Mrs Bennet) / Pride and Prejudice (1813). -Volume 3: Mansfield Park (1814). -Volume 4: Emma (1816). -Volume 5: Catherine Morland ou L'Abbaye de Northanger / Northanger Abbey (1818). -Volume 6: Persuasion (1818). Persuasion est le dernier roman de l'auteur anglais Jane Austen, publié posthumément en décembre 1817 mais daté de 1818. Outre le thème de la persuasion, le roman évoque d'autres sujets, tels que la Royal Navy, dont l'importance ici rappelle que deux des frères de Jane Austen y servaient, pour parvenir plus tard au rang d'amiral. Comme dans Northanger Abbey, la vie mondaine et superficielle de Bath - bien connue de Jane Austen - est longuement dépeinte, et sert d'arrière-plan à tout le second volume. Enfin, Persuasion marque une nette rupture avec les ouvrages précédents, par la chaleureuse attitude des personnages positifs qu'il met en scène, en fort contraste avec les héros souvent ternes, hautains ou peu cordiaux rencontrés auparavant, et dont le Mr Darcy de Orgueil et Préjugés est l'exemple extrême. Même si le titre du roman, Persuasion, n'est pas celui que Jane Austen utilisait pour en parler (selon sa soeur Cassandra, elles avaient toutes deux discuté de divers titres possibles, pour retenir finalement celui de The Elliots, Les Elliot), le thème de la persuasion est très présent dans le roman: les mots persuade ( persuader ), persuasion ( persuasion ), persuadable ( qui se laisse persuader ) ou encore unpersuadable ( qu'on ne peut persuader ), over-persuasion ( excès de persuasion ) reviennent régulièrement tout au long du roman. Ces termes se nuancent d'ailleurs de significations un peu différentes selon les contextes et les personnes auxquelles ils s'appliquent, d'autant que le mot anglais persuasion pouvait également prendre à l'époque le sens de conviction personnelle . Illustrateur: Charles Edmund Brock (1870 - 1938) est un dessinateur et illustrateur de livres anglais largement publié, qui avait adopté C. E. Brock pour signature. Il est l'aîné de quatre frères tous artistes, dont Richard-Henry (1871 - 1943) et surtout le plus jeune, Henry Matthew (1875 - 1960), avec lesquels il partageait un atelier à Cambridge. Ses illustrations des romans de Jane Austen sont particulièrement connues.Résumé Anne Elliot, beauté fanée et effacée de vingt-sept ans, est la seconde fille de Sir Walter Elliot, un baronnet veuf et vaniteux. Sa mère, une femme intelligente, est morte quatorze ans auparavant, en 180027; sa soeur aînée, Elizabeth, tient de son père la vanité de sa position. Sa plus jeune soeur, Mary, encline à se plaindre sans cesse, a épousé Charles Musgrove de Uppercross Hall, l'héritier d'un riche propriétaire des environs. Encore célibataire, sans personne dans son entourage qui soit digne de son esprit raffiné, Anne est en passe de devenir une vieille fille sans avenir.
