Schwerpunkt hierbei ist das politische (Wahl-)System der USA und dessen Beitrag zur Personalisierung im Wahlkampf. Erörtert werden inbesondere die Rolle der Vorwahlen und der Parteien im Wahlprozess, sowie das politische Verhältnis von Kanditat zu Partei, das Zurücktreten von Sachthemen in der Wahlkampfkommunikation zugunsten einer Fokussierung auf den Kandidaten und die Bedeutung des Fernsehens. Im zweiten Schritt richtet sich das Augenmerk auf die Professionalisierung des amerikanischen Präsidentschaftswahlkampfes. Professionalsierung wird hier im Sinne einer Externalisierung, Spezialisierung und Kommerzialisierung untersucht. Dabei wird explizit auf die professionelle Führung und Ausrichtung der Kampagne in all ihren aufgefächerten Spezialisierungen eingegangen. Dies schließt die Teilaspekte des Professionalisierungsphänomens wie Demoskopie, Fundraising, Themenmanagement und Web-Campaigning ein. Wie sieht das pofessionellesManagement einer Wahlkampagne aus? Wer organisiert diese und anhand welcher Kriterien lässt sich Professionalisierung messen? Welche Methoden wenden die Profi-Strategen an? Zum Schluß folgt ein Ausblick auf Deutschland und eine Analyse inwieweit sich der Personaliserungs- und Professionalisierungstrend in Deutschland bei Bundestagswahlen zeigt. Können wir hierzulande von einer Amerikanisierung deutscher Wahlkämpfe sprechen? Findet eine Angleichung an amerikanische Verhältnisse statt oder lediglich eine allgemeine Modernisierungstendenz? Lässt sich überhaut ein sinnvoller Vergleich zwischen den Wahlkämpfen in Deutschland und in den USA rechtfertigen?
