Questo libro è la traduzione italiana di quello uscito in inglese (2023) nel primo anniversario dell'invasione russa contro l'Ucraina: il libro vuole favorire una ricerca interdisciplinare sullo sfondo motivazionale che è alla base dell'attuale guerra in Ucraina così come sulle strategie per la salute mentale volte a promuovere la resilienza in un tale contesto traumatico. Dopo l'introduzione scritta dal curatore, Giuseppe Leo, il capitolo di Vamik Volkan esamina ciò che accade quando l'organizzazione di personalità di un leader politico si intreccia con processi sociali e politici e con immagini storiche condivise. Non vi si suggerisce che le questioni del "mondo reale" ed i calcoli riconducibili al processo secondario, correlati a tali orribili eventi, non siano importanti e dovrebbero essere scartati a favore delle considerazioni psicologiche. Piuttosto, lo scopo è quello di illustrare come gli psicoanalisti possano contribuire ad un'analisi più completa delle organizzazioni di personalità dei leader politici, delle loro interazioni coi loro sostenitori e del loro ruolo nei processi politici e sociali. Ksenia Zaitseva, una psicoterapeuta psicoanalitica di Kharkiv (Ucraina), nel suo capitolo ci dà una testimonianza personale davvero toccante delle prime settimane del conflitto, con l'intera gamma di sentimenti contraddittori e confusi, che hanno fatto seguito all'incredibile pressione di distruzione, di bombardamenti e di massacri di persone innocenti, e poi della sua esperienza di rifugiata in Austria, a sua volta capace di guidare gruppi psicologici a supporto dei rifugiati bambini ed adulti. Infine, un gruppo di psicologi dell'Università di Leopoli (Ucraina), Kalka, Blikhar, Tsyvinska, Kuzo, Marchuk e Katolyk, nel loro capitolo ha indagato le componenti peculiari della resilienza, le sue manifestazioni ed il suo sviluppo nelle persone che affrontano l'aggressione militare subita dall'Ucraina. I risultati dell'applicazione della tecnica del "Disegno della persona sotto la pioggia" rendono possibile valutare le componenti della resilienza ed i principali livelli della sua manifestazione nel gruppo di ricerca, con la dimostrazione di tre livelli di resilienza (basso, medio e alto). L'importanza dell'individuare differenti livelli di resilienza consiste nel trovare e nell'adottare modalità di sostegno psicologico per coloro che mostrano un livello basso o medio di resilienza. Incrementando tali livelli attraverso lo sviluppo di risorse adattative e di resistenza allo stress, gli individui possono mobilizzare le loro riserve interne in modo da proteggere il loro Paese e fornire assistenza a vari livelli.
