Se preguntarán qué tiene de especial José Benjamín Rodríguez Suárez, el destinatario de esos honores, un hombre nacido en Alienes -municipio de Valdés, Principado de Asturias- un 5 de marzo de 1959, y que lleva el nombre del médico que asistió con destreza a su madre Benigna en el parto. Yo respondo sin temor a equivocarme: este asturiano sencillo y sincero atesora los valores más grandes que pueden honrar la figura de cualquier ser humano: bondad, altruismo, emprendimiento, entrega sin límites y un extraordinario amor a la tierra que le vio venir al mundo. Podríamos decir que amor a la Patria. A su admirado pueblo de Alienes, que no deja de ser una patria como la que más. Repleta de vivencias, de recuerdos, de momentos buenos y de otros que no lo fueron tanto, pero a fin de cuentas la cuna de los sentimientos más sublimes. El pueblo es aquí como la madre que acoge al hijo y por la que éste se sacrifica después, agradecido, tratando de devolverle todo lo que le entregó un día. Y eso es lo que hace José Benjamín por su pueblo, Alienes: amarlo como si fuese la misma fuente de su vida, entregándose en cuerpo y alma a la consecución de proyectos, obras, festejos y todo cuanto surja para mantener las tradiciones y servir de mejora a la convivencia diaria de los vecinos. Todo el mundo lo conoce como Pepe El Renteiro y por sus venas corre sangre vaqueira, de lo que se siente muy orgulloso. Su virtudes son muchas, pero hay una que yo quiero resaltar hasta la saciedad: su amor a esa tierra que tanto venera, a la que quiere no solo por sus gentes, sino que como entidad abstracta. Por eso yo antes hablaba del concepto de patria al referirme al enclave de Alienes. Porque a Pepe le embarga ese mismo sentimiento que atesoraban -y que ahora escasea tanto-- los caudillos que buscaron la independencia de los distintos países del continente americano en el siglo XIX. Para ellos la patria era el terruño, el lugar donde se nacía, la colonia para la que anhelaban el reconocimiento de identidad territorial y cultural. Era una noción del todo sentimental, que surgía de las entrañas de manera natural. Lo mismo que le ocurre a José Benjamín con su parroquia de Alienes.
