A pregação, como uma forma distinta de comunicação da vontade de Deus revelada na sua Palavra, está em declínio. Em muitas igrejas ela tem sido substituída por um número cada vez maior de atividades. Há 30 anos atrás, o Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones foi convidado a proferir uma série de conferências no Westminster Theological Seminary, na Filadélfia. Nessas palestras, publicadas em 1971 com o título Pregação e Pregadores, ele enfatizou que a pregação é a tarefa primordial da igreja e do ministro, e explicou que estava ressaltando isso "por causa da tendência, hoje, de depreciar a pregação em prol de várias outras formas de atividade." A situação não melhorou. John J. Timmerman observou, quase vinte anos depois, que "em muitas igrejas o sermão é uma ilha que diminui cada vez mais em um mar turbulento de atividades." O conceito reformado de palavra de Deus é mais amplo do que aquele geralmente compreendido pela expressão. Ele inclui a palavra escrita: a Bíblia; a palavra encarnada: Cristo; a palavra simbolizada ou representada: os sacramentos do batismo e da ceia; e a palavra proclamada: a pregação. Na teologia reformada, portanto, a pregação da Palavra de Deus é palavra de Deus. Esta concepção de pregação é professada no primeiro capítulo da Segunda Confissão Helvética, de Bullinger, nos seguintes termos: A Pregação da Palavra de Deus é palavra de Deus. Por isso, quando a Palavra de Deus é presentemente pregada na igreja por pregadores legitimamente chamados, cremos que a própria palavra de Deus é proclamada e recebida pelos fiéis; e que nenhuma outra palavra de Deus deve ser inventada nem esperada do céu... Isto não significa identificação absoluta da palavra pregada com a palavra escrita. As Escrituras são definitivas e supremas, inerentemente normativas, enquanto que a autoridade da pregação é sempre delas derivada e a elas subordinada. Não significa também que a pregação seja inspirada ou inerrante. Os pregadores, por mais fiéis que sejam na exposição das Escrituras, não são preservados do erro como o foram os autores bíblicos. Muito menos significa que os ministros da Palavra sejam instrumentos de novas revelações do Espírito. O próprio documento reformado acima citado repudia essa ideia, ao afirmar que "nenhuma outra palavra de Deus deve ser inventada nem esperada do céu." Portanto, nesta obra, exploraremos a evolução da heresia Arminiana e o dano que ela tem causado a verdadeira Pregação do Evangelho de jesus Cristo; Boa leitura e que o Espírito Santo o ilumine.
