Vivimos en una sociedad en la que han sido sustituidos los valores por las leyes del mercado. Valores básicos como justicia, dignidad, igualdad, solidaridad, fraternidad, libertad o el más valioso, el derecho a la vida, se diluyen en un mercado sediento de éxitos efímeros y oropeles vanos. De ahí surge el deterioro de las relaciones humanas, porque no deberíamos olvidar que los seres humanos no tienen precio, sino valor.

El problema es que se confunde valor con precio, según sentencia que nos llega, surcando el tiempo, de nuestro insigne Francisco de Quevedo; una afirmación que, tiempo después, popularizaría Antonio Machado: "Sólo el necio confunde valor con precio". Lamentablemente, la realidad es tozuda y sigue habiendo muchos necios en el mundo que siguen empecinados en lo mismo.

Por supuesto, salvo el ser humano, casi todo tiene su precio, aunque con frecuencia no sepamos desvelar su valor, lo que suele colocarnos en situaciones al menos confusas. Para ir en una determinada dirección lo primero que tenemos que saber es a dónde queremos ir; y no sólo a dónde, sino para qué y por qué. Claro que para no cometer errores irreversibles, es conveniente no perder de vista los valores que nos motivan y creer en ellos; dicho con otras palabras, tener presente el precio que es preciso pagar y si merece la pena intentarlo.

Nuestro mundo está lleno de ambiciones y escaso de esperanzas, y pasamos por él sometidos a una permanente improvisación. "Lo inesperado es nuestra esperanza", en palabras del diplomático y filósofo Federico Mayor Zaragoza; un pensamiento que nos pone sobre aviso del peligro que corremos cuando vivimos al albur de los acontecimientos, sin marcarnos una meta, un objetivo y depositamos en la improvisación nuestra esperanza. La permaz falta de meditación llega al punto de que ignoremos con frecuencia el alcance de nuestra realidad. Y si no conocemos la realidad, jamás podremos transformarla cuando no nos agrada, ni aún siquiera podremos disfrutarla plenamente, cuando nos satisface.

Es necesario extender la vista al futuro, tan lejos como nos lo permita nuestra capacidad de percepción. Ver lo invisible, ese ha de ser el objetivo central de nuestra vida; ver lo invisible para poder llegar a conquistar lo imposible. En realidad, lo que vemos es mentira, lo invisible es lo real. La cáscara no es lo que da sentido a la nuez, sino el fruto que custodia. Lo dijo con otras palabras el escritor francés Antoine de Saint-Exuppéry en su obra universal El principito: "Lo esencial es invisible a los ojos", es decir, el verdadero valor de las cosas no siempre es evidente, como puede ser la amistad o el amor. Ese es el mensaje que trasciende de las palabras que nos han llegado de Jesús de Nazaret quien, entre otras sentencias, afirmó "Conoceréis la verdad y la verdad os hará libres". Dos palabras clave: conocer y verdad.

Lo que encierra mayor peligro es la pasividad silenciosa de los poderes constituidos, sean civiles o religiosos, ante el desprecio a los valores humanos. El problema de fondo es actuar sobre los efectos y no sobre las causas; y, sobre todo, confundir los efectos con las causas.

Aprender a ver con los ojos del alma es comenzar a percibir la realidad en su verdadera dimensión; sobre todo, comenzar a ser conscientes de la relatividad que tiene todo aquello que nos rodea. "Todo es relativo menos Dios y el hambre" es la conclusión a la que llega el obispo Pedro Casaldáliga. Pero "a Dios nadie le ha visto jamás", según percibe el evangelista Juan (Juan 1:18), luego, sin ser Dios relativo, la realidad que percibimos acerca de Dios sí lo es. Por consiguiente, el afán del ser humano debería centrarse en conocer la verdad, la verdad de todo y, por extensión, la verdad de Dios.
