A comienzos del siglo XVI en diferentes exploraciones llegan a la isla la Hispañola, (Santo Domingo) los primeros conquistadores españoles, figurando entre ellos Rodrigo de Bastidas, quien en viaje por Sudamérica descubre el istmo panameño y le nombra Tierra Firme, Cristóbal Colón (1502) pasa por el istmo y en otra expedición, los capitanes Vasco Núñez de Balboa, Diego Nicuesa y Fernández de Enciso llegan al Darién, entre otros navegantes. Seguidamente fundan los asentamientos de Nombre de Dios, Natá y Santa María del Darién emplazadas en dicha Tierra Firme, hoy territorio panameño. En 1514, el Rey Católico, Fernando II de Aragón, envía en expedición especial como gobernador y Capitán General a Pedrarias Dávila y Cota quien llega al territorio del Darién que ya era llamada con el nombre de Castilla del Oro, donde su visión en 1519 lo llevará a fundar en el mar del Sur la nueva capital que se llamaría Panamá. Más tarde, será aquella ciudad uno de los centros de expediciones más importantes en la historia de la colonización mesoamericana, vía estratégica en el mapa de las rutas comerciales de esa época, lo que marcó al istmo como un territorio expansivo más racional del tránsito interoceánico al servicio del Imperio Español para la remisión de todo lo extraído del continente americano incluso hasta el presente. En la nueva capital de Panamá, enviaría Pedrarias, en 1523, a su lugarteniente y hombre de confianza, Capitán Francisco Hernández de Córdoba a la conquista de nuevos territorios (Provincia de Nicaragua). Hernández de Córdoba funda Santiago de los Caballeros de León y Granada en 1524. Logros fundacionales que revisten en la provincia un aspecto simbólico al evidenciar la institucionalización del poder español en sus nuevas colonias americanas sobre los grupos indígenas establecidos siglos atrás. Las primeras ciudades tanto en Panamá como en la Provincia de Nicaragua fueron las bases de algunas futuras naciones con autoridades civiles, religiosas o militares al realizarse la "pacificación" en dichos territorios que engrandecerían a la Corona Española.
About the Author: Marco A. Cardenal nació en la ciudad colonial de León, Departamento de León, Nicaragua; el 26 de Noviembre de 1941. Hijo del matrimonio formado por Alfonso Cardenal Terán y María de las Mercedes Tellería Muñoz. Estudió en el Colegio Calasanz de León y Managua en donde obtiene su título de Bachiller en Ciencias y Letras. Estudió inglés en la ciudad de Boston. En 1962 recorrió Europa en compañía de sus padres y hermanos. Luego ingresa al Seminario Nacional de la Arquidiócesis de Managua, pero no llega a terminar sus estudios para sacerdote. Se dedica al negocio familia: la Librería Cardenal, de la cual adquiere un gran conocimiento del negocio de los libros y se vuelve un profundo bibliófilo y conocedor de la historia de Nicaragua. Ha escrito "Nicaragua en su Historia" (2002) y "Nicaragua: Breve Recorrido Histórico. 1502-2005". Es Miembro Correspondiente de la Academia de Geografía e Historia; Miembro Correspondiente de la Academia Nicaragüense de Ciencias Genealógicas; Miembro co Fundador del Movimiento Cultural Nicaragüense, en la ciudad de Miami, Florida, en donde reside en el exilio desde hace más de treinta años. Es Miembro de Honor del Instituo de Cultura Hispánica de los Estados Unidos; Miembro co Fundador del Instituto Nicaragüense de Genealogía e Historia, en Miami.
