El Padre Narciso Basté S.I. fue un buen sacerdote jesuita que conocieron bien los miles de jóvenes que se acercaron al Patronato de la Juventud Obrera de Valencia antes de la Guerra Civil. La presente obra abarca y explica la labor educativa del Padre Basté S.I o, lo que es lo mismo, la labor educativa en el Patronato de la Juventud Obrera de Valencia, y su congregación mariana, en el período 1901-1936 (1931, si tenemos en cuenta la disolución de la Compañía de Jesús por la Asamblea Constituyente de la Segunda República). La obra desmiente el desinterés de los jesuitas por las clases obreras. Los patronatos de jóvenes obreros fueron una novedad para la educación de la juventud obrera, en la España de finales del siglo XIX, a imitación de otras parecidas que venían desarrollándose en el sur de Francia, Bélgica, Alemania... Surgen en el contexto socio-histórico de la respuesta del catolicismo social al avance de las ideas socialistas, comunistas y anarquistas entre el proletariado urbano, y conviven, en una España convulsa, con movimientos pedagógicos que pretenden la implantación y primacía de la escuela laica frente a la escuela religiosa (krausismo, escuela moderna, escuela nueva, escuela racional, escuela natura, escuela societaria...). El sistematizador del movimiento, en la región valenciana, fue el jesuita Antonio Vicent S.I., quien elaboró un reglamento para los mismos a partir de su experiencia como consiliario en el Patronato de la Juventud Obrera de Valencia, creado en 1884, y quien encomendaría la dirección al también jesuita Narciso Basté S.I. Intuición suya fue la creación del equipo de fútbol Gimnástico F.C., antecedente del actual Levante Unión Deportiva.
