Le vieil antiquaire qui la lui vend révèle son pouvoir mystérieux: la peau peut exaucer tous les désirs de son propriétaire, mais chaque voeu exaucé la fait rétrécir, réduisant d'autant la durée de vie de son possesseur. Raphaël, en proie au désespoir et à la curiosité, accepte le pacte et prend possession de la peau de chagrin, plongeant ainsi dans une aventure à la fois enivrante et mortelle.

Balzac nous entraîne alors dans un Paris bouillonnant du début du XIXe siècle, où Raphaël oscille entre espoir et désespoir, richesse et pauvreté, amour et solitude. Il utilise le pouvoir de la peau pour réaliser ses désirs les plus fous, mais chaque exaucement le rapproche inexorablement de la mort. La peau, symbole de ses ambitions et de ses excès, devient un miroir de son âme et un compte à rebours macabre.

À travers les péripéties de Raphaël, Balzac explore les thèmes universels de la condition humaine: la quête de pouvoir, les illusions du bonheur matériel, les sacrifices imposés par la soif de réussite et l'inévitable confrontation avec la mort. Le protagoniste rencontre divers personnages, chacun représentant une facette de la société parisienne - des aristocrates frivoles aux artistes déchus, des scientifiques ambitieux aux amants passionnés. Ces rencontres enrichissent le récit et offrent une peinture vivante et détaillée de la société de l'époque.

L'un des moments les plus poignants du roman est la rencontre de Raphaël avec Pauline, une jeune femme pure et dévouée, incarnation de l'amour véritable et du renoncement.
