About the Book

English summary: Peter and Paul are represented in the Christian Church almost as twins. The early theologian Origen found it difficult to believe that they were able to have a serious conflict, in which Paul reproached Peter concerning the truth about the right to live according to the Bible. It was hard to understand how Paul lost this dispute and was forced into almost complete isolation. Both Paul and Luke were silent about many things and we do not have a version of the conflict from Peters point of view. Hornoff attempts through his many years of study to bring sense to this event through the various aspects of Christology, the Jewish Covenant and the meaning of the Torah. This book is also an investigation of earliest Christianity from time when it was still an internal Jewish matter with particular Jewish problems. Was Jesus greater than Moses? Was the Torah divine? Were sinners to be excluded? A bold theory that was raised at a meeting of the apostles which initially brought agreement and the detention of Peter (according to Luke) right after the conference was resolved in Peters change in attitude afterwards. Hans Joachim Hornoff (b. 1925) was a scholarly bookseller for ten years in Bremen. Thereafter he headed up the archives of the Julius Springer Press in Berlin. In this time he collaborated in the founding and development of a new community as a preacher as well as the author of numerous theological studies.
