Paul Valéry fréquente un milieu artistique extraordinaire et dont l'histoire personnelle s'imbrique dans celle de la peinture de la fin du XIXe et du début du XXe siècles. Mais il s'agit d'un artiste et peintre à part entière. Des années de formation à la maturité, cette étude englobe la pratique du dessin, de l'aquarelle et de la gravure en rapport avec les grands motifs de l'univers valéryen qui sont ici convoqués dans leur ensemble. Tout le long des Cahiers, et sous le signe de Léonard de Vinci et de Degas, le théoricien que fut Valéry mène une recherche théorique et esthétique qui aborde tous les aspects du dessin qu'il n'a cessé de redéfinir. Bénéficiant d'un cahier d'illustrations auquel renvoie en de nombreux points le texte, cet ouvrage s'attache à cerner la place que Valéry assigne à l'oeuvre artistique dans l'ensemble de son entreprise créatrice. Entre l'écrit et le dessin, point de discontinuité mais au contraire une correspondance sémiotique naturelle qui entre en résonance avec la visée générale du Système valéryen.
Der Dichter und Schriftsteller Paul Valéry (1871-1945) wird mit dieser Monographie zum ersten Mal als Zeichner und Maler erkennbar. Schon in sehr jungen Jahren zeichnete und aquarellierte Valéry, befasste sich mit Ornamentik und Architektur. Seit seiner Heirat mit Jeannie Gobillard (der Nichte von Berthe Morisot) - die Valéry über Degas 1898 kennengelernt hatte, war er mit der Familie Rouart und den Impressionisten persönlich eng verbunden. Themen seiner kunstphilosophischen Essays sind dann Leonardo da Vinci, Corot, Daumier, Veronese, Degas, Morisot, Manet, Renoir u.a. Den Prix des Peintres erhält Valéry 1923. Er hat nicht wenige seiner Gedichte durch Kupferstiche und Radierungen illustriert, seine Cahiers/Hefte und Skizzenbücher enthalten viele Illustrationen und Zeichnungen - die Paul Ryan hier zum ersten Mal der Öffentlichkeit vorlegt. Das Vorwort schrieb Martine Rouart, die Enkelin Valérys, die als Künstlerin, Malerin und Bildhauerin in Paris lebt.
