About the Book

Author and award-winning journalist John Allen Small explores another avenue of his storytelling talents with this collection of poetry. Written over the course of many years - some of them dating all the way back to his childhood - the poems gathered together in this volume cover a wide range of subject matter, and touch on emotions we all feel at some point or another in our lives... whether we admit it or not.
About the Author: John Allen Small is an award-winning journalist, columnist and broadcaster whose newspaper work has earned more than 200 awards from such organizations as the Oklahoma Press Association, the Society of Professional Journalists, the Associated Press, the National Newspaper Association, the Oklahoma Education Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. A radio version of his weekly newspaper column, "Small Talk," was also honored as "Best Radio Commentary" by the Oklahoma Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists in 1997. In addition to his career as a journalist John has made a name for himself as a fiction writer. He has thus far written and published four collections of short stories: Days Gone By: Legends And Tales Of Sipokni West (2007); Something In The Air (2011); If You Can't Take The Heat, Don't Tickle The Dragon (2014); and Stories Of Old (2016). He has contributed to several anthologies, including the 2005 Locus Award-nominated science fiction collection Myths For The Modern Age: Philip José Farmer's Wold Newton Universe; and the Pulp Ark Award-winning The Green Hornet: Still At Large (2012). Other anthologies he has contributed to include The Worlds Of Philip José Farmer 2: Of Dust And Soul (2011); The Avenger: Roaring Heart Of The Crucible (2013); and Tales Of The Wold Newton Universe (2013). In addition, he was one of several writers who made special contributions to the 2013 deluxe hardcover reissue of Philip José Farmer's Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic Life, published by Meteor House Press. John was born at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City on June 1, 1963; lived in the Bradley-Bourbonnais-Kankakee area of Illinois for most of the next 28 years (with brief sojourns in Texas and Athens, Greece, thrown in to break up the monotony); then returned to his native state in 1991, where he currently resides in the Tishomingo/Ravia area. He married his high school sweetheart, the former Melissa Ulrich, on April 5, 1986; they have two sons, Joshua and William. Mr. Small is the News Editor and columnist for the Johnston County Capital-Democrat, a weekly newspaper headquartered in Tishomingo, Oklahoma. He obtained his sobriquet, "Bard of the Lesser Boulevards," from a journalism colleague - the late Phil Byrum - in recognition of the writing style and wide-ranging subject matter and of his newspaper column.
