En 1915, Adrienne Monnier inaugure au 7, rue de l'Odéon une librairie-bibliothèque de prêt d'un genre nouveau, La Maison des Amis des Livres, appelée à devenir le rendez-vous favori du Tout-Paris littéraire, d'Aragon à Walter Benjamin, d'André Gide à Nathalie Sarraute. En 1921, Sylvia Beach installe en face, au n° 12, une boutique fondée deux ans plus tôt sur le même modèle, Shakespeare and Company, dont les habitués ont pour noms Gertrude Stein, Francis Scott Fitzgerald, Marianne Moore, Ernest Hemingway, Djuna Barnes...Pendant près de trente ans, de rencontres en lectures publiques, d'expositions en soirées musicales, l'Odéonie va constituer l'un des foyers les plus actifs de la vie culturelle de l'entre-deux-guerres, dont la renommée franchira les frontières de la France avec la publication de l'Ulysse de James Joyce, édité en 1922 par les soins de Sylvia Beach, puis traduit et publié en français en 1929 grâce à Adrienne Monnier.Éditrices, mais aussi traductrices et revuistes, les deux libraires ont contribué de façon majeure à la circulation des savoirs, des idées et des langues, par leur rôle d'intermédiaires entre les livres, les lecteurs et les écrivains, la France et l'Amérique. Que nous apprennent les registres d'abonnés sur les lectures d'Aragon, de Breton et même de Lacan lorsqu'ils avaient 20 ans, de Sartre ou d'Hemingway ? Comment les réseaux entre auteurs et éditeurs se sont-ils constitués, et quelle fut, finalement, l'identité de la rue de l'Odéon, en regard notamment de la NRF et du groupe surréaliste ? Grâce à Laure Murat et à son exceptionnel talent de chercheuse et de narratrice, ces questions trouvent désormais une réponse, puisée aux sources de milliers d'archives inédites, dispersées entre l'université de Princeton, la bibliothèque Doucet et l'IMEC.En consacrant pour la première fois une étude d'envergure à ces lieux mythiques et largement méconnus, le livre entend non seulement rendre à Adrienne Monnier et Sylvia Beach la place déterminante qui est la leur, mais aussi mettre en lumière l'audace de leur entreprise, que l'on ne saurait réduire à la seule animation d'un salon littéraire, auquel l'image des femmes est traditionnellement attachée.Née en 1967, Laure Murat vit et travaille à Paris.
